Numerous parents struggle in deciding if they should to enroll their child into school as soon as possible, when the child becomes able to go to mandated schooling, or whether they should wait a year or two to send their child to school. For many parents, there is a clear age at which they should enroll their child into school, which is mandated by state law. However, a great number of parents want to know when their child is ready and cognitively able to begin school. These parents are not heavily focused upon the age of their child, but their intellectual abilities and whether their children will be ready to start school by the current mandated schooling age. Many studies have been conducted to prove and accumulate information to best assess when children are the most able and mentally prepared to begin school. ` Those who support children in starting school at an early age, claim early childhood education is of critical importance during a child’s early developmental period. Originally the practice of holding back a child for a year from entering kindergarten in order to provide them an athletic advantage due to advanced physical maturity, the practice of redshirting has developed an emphasis on academic maturity, as redshirting allows students to enter kindergarten having an advantage over their younger and less mature peers in terms of academic preparedness. Redshirting for academic purposes has been on the rise in American schools, as nearly 17% of children in 2008 were admitted to kindergarten at age 6, whereas only 9% of children were admitted to kindergarten at age 6 back in 1993. Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
For years it has been up for debate: if school should start later or not. Well, I’m not going to deny that teens do need more sleep but that doesn’t mean you have to start school later. It is their jobs to make sure that they get enough sleep that night or any night. If school starts later the dismissal might not match up with parents work schedule. Also, some teens have jobs that would require them to be there before school is dismissed, and they would have to work less hours and make less money. School shouldn’t start any later than it does now because if teens are staying up late now they are going to stay up even later then, and when school starts late it gets dismissed even later.
The four learning goals are: knowledge (consists of facts, concepts, ideas, and vocabulary), skills ( small units of action that occur in short period of time), disposition ( respond to certain situations), and feelings ( emotional states) ( Katz 2003). With an successful care giving and early education, it can bring an positive outcome to a child’s life. What a child learns in their early years are things that will continue to helps them along in their future in school and in the real world. When a child is introduced to early childhood education, they can enhance many benefits from it. The benefits that a child will encounter when set into an early education program are: they are less likely to be antisocial and repeat a grade, achieve higher levels of achievement, are more likely to graduate from high school, be more prepared to enter school, and have higher IQ’s (CPPP1999). Early education can help a child show their abilities from learning to their parent and teacher which will help the parent and teacher have positive expectations for the child. In an personal interview with five year old Cochran (2003) said, “ I like showing my mom what I learn. My favorite thing that I have learned is the alphabet in sign language. I have twenty new friends.” As a child starts to grow in life, their first three years is when their brain development increases most. Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start times are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in many other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the Sleep Foundation, "The change will affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police, youth sports clubs, bus drivers and many others." School start times have been a discussion in many schools throughout the United States. Everyday, kids wake up tired and not ready for the day. Some students might even skip the day because they feel exhausted. If a test is in the morning, a student might perform worse because of the time of day, then in the afternoon, they would be awake and ready. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but the majority of kids do not have time in the morning due to the early start time. When most students wake up, they have to get ready, brush their teeth, and get to their ride. That is not possible if schools starts so early. Early education includes all children from birth to age eight. Opting to provide excellent early education comes with many opportunity costs. Opportunity costs are losing potential gains when choosing one option versus the other. Anything other than giving children excellent early education comes with an opportunity cost that does not look forward to maximizing the future of next generations. It is important to include education early on in a child’s life to help secure the positive effects this will have on their development into adulthood.
