Children today are not being educated on the benefits of maintaining a healthy diet and those that are educated may not understand the positive outcome it can have on their life. In addition to teaching our youth about nutrition, most public school systems fail at providing healthy lunch options. That is however, if they have a kitchen to prepare food in, some schools don’t have kitchens and are given meals that are already prepared, so they only need to heat the meal up. According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 94 percent of school lunches do not meet the U.S. Agriculture Department 's regulatory standards. Furthermore, serving processed food is cheaper than preparing foods with fresh produce. However, with children spending around eight hours a day at school, were most of the time is sitting and learning, it is vital they are eating a balanced diet consisting of nutrient rich fruits and vegetables, rather than processed foods that latch on to fatty deposits within the body.

Children are subjects of target marketing and are easily influenced by what they can relate to; video games, cartoon characters, colors that catch the eye, all capture the child’s mind. Like I mentioned before, it’s not just the education system to be at fault, we as parents need to teach our children, even if we can’t provide those options, but educate them on the benefits. No matter the financial situation, time management flaws, or public education systems, our children need to learn about the negative impact of obesity and the positivity of being proactive and getting involved in sports, or just being outside. If all else fails, draw a picture of Mickey Mouse on an apple and put small Happy Meal toys as a gift for eating a healthy meal. Our children are our future, but it is up to the adults to teach them how to live a healthy life.
