Obesity is a serious problem in the United States. Obesity may have serious effects on children, and childhood obesity affect them in their adulthood. Our family friend’s son is ten years old and at least twenty pounds overweight .When I saw him the first time, several questions arose in my mind about his overweight. Why does he become obese? What are the cause and effect of obesity? How does it show up at the symptom of obesity? They live close to my house and we frequently visit each other’s house. Therefore, I got a chance to monitor our friend’s son’s activities. He prefer to eats fast food, surgery, and junk food and he stay inside and plays video game .He does not want to involve in outdoor games such as, jumping and running. This lack of exercise and bad diet may be the reason of his overweight. Today, obesity is big issue in America and my friend also suffering from this problem, so I decided to explore all the harm that affect childhood obesity.
First, I needed to be defined obesity statistics. It is true that obesity is growing problem. Obesity is defined as being dangerously overweight. According to C.D.C report approximately 12.5 Million children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese. In 2011-2012 obesity was decreased from 13.9%to 8.4%.Obesity prevalence was higher among Hispanic group, 22.4%, non-Hispanic black yoth20.2%, non-Hispanic with youth14.1%, and Asian youth8.6%. C.D.C survey also found that mostly low income, preschool aged children are obese. Today obesity is a serious problem in the United States and its main causes may be poor nutrition, and lack of exercise. Genetic may also one of the reason of obesity. Government and many groups such as first lady Michelle Obama, New York City mayor are trying to reduce the obesity and launching a different types of program to support it .If our friend and other parents encouraged their children for healthy food regular exercise, and check up their children’s health regularly, w may reduce the childhood obesity rate in the future.
Child obesity became a very serious issue that is taking on the health of the nation 's children. It is everyone responsibility to work on preventing and reducing childhood obesity, from the parents who are suppose to care about their children’s health, to the public health representatives, who should care about a future healthy nation, and everyone in between. Every part of society should create a set of lifestyle changes in order to save our kids from obesity. There are many aspects, which have to be changed or improved, including parent’s nutrition education, children’s physical activity and kid’s nutrition in a school and home, food industry and etc.
A national epidemic is occurring, the war between food and people. In the United States, about “32% of children (from 2 to 19 years old) are obese” (Bernadac 1). As the years continue to go on the rate of obese children are increasing as well. In the past the problem did not have much consideration due to a low rate of affected children. Now families are suffering the long-term consequences of having an obese child. Some of those health effects are “Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis” (CDC 1). A problem with this type of drastic effects may have a solution; method prevention for the future generations and correct treatment for those who are already obese can lower the rate.
The human body requires the intake of food in order to function properly. The foods that we decide to eat has an effect on the ability to use are mind, are strength, and even how prone we are to getting sick or hurt. Eating to much of the wrong foods, with little or no exercise can cause the silent but deadly epidemic of obesity in children and in teens. In the past, obesity was just known as a condition that only affected adults. In this generation the youths are becoming more prone to obesity. In 1995 an average of 18 million children all around the world was categorized as being overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). In a Childhood Obesity Interventions article it says that 17% (12.5 million) of children in the United States is considered to be obese (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This outrageous number of overweight children in the world is almost tripled in 2010, where 43 million children under 5 are considered to be overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). Another staggering statistic is more than 60% percent of the children that are classified as overweight before they reach puberty, will be overweight as they become adults (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This leads us to the most stifling fact of there being 2.8 million people in the world that die from being overweight or obese each year (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). These shocking statistics show how dangerous obesity really is, and should urge everyone to fight against this epidemic.
Does low socioeconomic status bear a significant role in the obesity epidemic? A national survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2010) estimated that more than two-thirds of Americans are now overweight or obese (body mass index of over 30), and the percentage is escalating. The Census Bureau (2011) reported 46.2 million people in America are currently living beneath the official poverty line. The official poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1 percent; up from 14.3 percent in 2009; this was the third consecutive annual increase in the poverty rate (Census Bureau, 2011). One might assume that obesity and poverty are not associated, but this is not accurate. The correlation between poverty and obesity can be witnessed in the vast majority of the low-income communities amidst the country. Low socioeconomic status influences patterns of eating (food insecurities), and restricts access to healthy and affordable nourishment linking poverty to the soaring obesity epidemic; solutions to lower the risk for obesity in low socioeconomic individuals includes: changing the dynamics of low income communities and second solution is to increase the benefits and participation in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

As technologies are developed and improved upon, most human activities have become automated, this reduces active physical activities involve in daily lifestyle, such as walking to school, working on the farm, playing at the parks, to watching television, playing video games, computer games all day. Hence, being involve in regular physical activities has become a matter of choice, which most people are not dispose to doing. There has been continuous increase of children with obesity in United States. Factors such as, unhealthy eating patterns, genetic factors, lack of physical activities or a combination of two or more of these factors contributed to children being overweight or obese. Children whose parents or siblings are overweight may be at an increased risk of becoming overweight themselves. However, this can be linked to share family behaviors such as eating and activity habits. A child’s total diet and activity level play an important role in determining a child’s weight. Today, many children spend a lot of time being inactive. In the film Killer at large, one of the major points mentioned as a cause of overweight or obesity in children is the sedentary lifestyle of children.

Some doctors are even calling childhood obesity an epidemic because of the large percentage of children being diagnosed each year as either overweight or obese. “According to DASH sixteen to thirty-three percent of American children each year is being told they are obese.” (Childhood Obesity) There is only a small percentage, approximately one percent, of those children who are obese due to physical or health related issues; although, a condition that is this serious, like obesity, could have been prevented.
