What is childhood? To some its the upbringing and quality of life given to the child within the first several years of the child's life. In its simplest form, childhood is classified as the age span which ranges from birth to adolescence. During those years of childhood, most children go through various different physical and cognitive changes. According to the famous cognitive developmental theorist Jean Piaget, in psychology, childhood consists of four separate stages of development. Those stages are sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages. Back in the twelfth century Philippe Aries argued that in Medieval times there was barely any place for childhood in sense that Medieval art lacked the portrayal of, or did not care to include, how children were raised, educated, clothed, etc. In support to his argument, Ariés stated “Yet, the miniaturist has grouped had grouped around Jesus what are obviously eight men, without any of the characteristics of childhood; they have simply been depicted on a smaller scale” (Ariés pg. 9). This quote states that children were sometimes depicted in these paintings yet, they were still absent from the illustrations. The first was that childhood is simply an unimportant phase in life of which no records were kept. The second, in the even of the death of a child, it was thought that the child has disappeared so soon in life that the child was unworthy of remembrance. For many years records indicated that residents of Basque country in the sixteenth century practiced a custom in which when a child dies, he/she was buried in the home or garden without baptism, as if the child were a domesticated pet. In support to the claim that Ariés makes about infant mortality, Joanne Ferraro, states that high mortality rate among infants was due to some poor mothers who were malnourished and simply did not have enough milk to feed their children.
