Parents begin teaching their children in the early stages of life, even while they are still infants. Establishing a schedule for feeding, sleeping, bath time and playtime are the first things babies learn, and come to depend on. Providing mobiles that play music, toys that entertain, even parents who sing to their babies are ways in which help them develop into curious toddlers, and this is why the first and best teachers are parents.
As babies enter the toddler stage, they demand attention, and are very eager to learn. Parents encourage them to walk, teach them to drink out of a cup, and consequently as a child grows, parents are the most important and constant influence in a toddler’s life. They become to depend on parents for everything, and learn through observance as well.
Good habits take form in the early stages of a child’s life. Parents encourage early learning by setting aside time for their children. Reading a book to them every day stimulates word recognition, and soon they are able to tell you the story, word for word. They will look forward to this time and this, therefore, teaches them to be dependable.
The way in which parents communicate with their children and show interest in what they are doing teaches them social skills. When parents inquire about their day, engage in conversation at the dinner table, as well as while driving in the car makes children feel important, and parents are teaching their children to be compassionate, while also showing them the importance of caring for others.
The first and best teachers are parents, and children watch and learn from them. They realize and come to understand many important characteristics and moral values. Parents who keep everything on schedule, prepare healthy meals and attend all school functions teach children the fundamentals of being dependable and trustworthy. When parents assign children chores as well and everyone works together as a family to accomplish these chores, it teaches them to be responsible adults. In addition, parents who respect each other and speak kindly towards others are setting examples in which children, too, will follow.
Children need structure. It is a parent’s job to instill structure and rules in their child. Although we need to raise independent children, the life skills taught to children are more important than any style of parenting. Teaching children unconditional love, time management and the proper attitudes, and skills, children grow up confident and feel loved.
Children are our future of the world. They are the ones who will create the next generation. Therefore, it is important to start young within children, teaching them right from wrong. It is important preventing them from following the same negative patterns as kids of today. Many kids today do not really have a strong discipline, love and support at home. In general being a parent does not come easy or, with a manual on how to be a positive effective parent. There is a different factor that causes children to be disobedient or out of control. Or sometimes the parent can be doing everything right and shows much love as they can for their child. But, the child is given a negative and avoidance feedback.

The interactive influences of genes and experience literally shape the architecture of the developing brain and the most important ingredient is the nature of a child’s engagement in the relationship with his or her parents (Bales 1). The parenting style of a mother or father has a strong and direct impact on the sequence of development through which the child progresses on the way to becoming a physically, mentally and emotionally healthy individual.
Over time, there has been an expansion in our knowledge of the ways in which humans develop and learn. It is now known that babies are beginning to learn even before they are born. I often find myself wishing I had known these things when my children were developing. We all want our children to be the best that they can be; with some knowledge of how children learn and the sequential steps they must go through in many areas of development, we can provide many experiences at home to help them reach their potential. The information presented during this course has increase my knowledge and experience about my role as an early childhood educator. The resources presented helped me to learn ways to promote healthy development and well-being of all children and how to be an advocate for them. I believe this class enriched my knowledge about infant-toddler care and education to the point that I would most like to express to others its importance. One thing that I would like to share is that infant–toddler care and education is crucial for physical and cognitive development.
