Recommended: What are the causes of child abuse and neglect
At some point in life, everyone has asked why. The word why is used to find a reason or purpose. It can be used for various occasions. For example, when asking why the car broke down or when a child is curious about why they need to take a shower after playing at the park. Sometimes just why by itself can be a plethora of questions, especially when an abused and/or neglected child questions “Why?” Although they only say “Why?” what they can really be asking is “Why is mommy never home, why does daddy hurt me, or why can’t I ever do anything right?” Child abuse and neglect is a big controversial social justice issue. It happens everyday all around the world and can greatly impact the life of the abused and/or neglected child.
World wide over 40 million children are subjected to abuse and neglect per year. Many grow up blaming themselves, their parents, others or god for what happened. Some children are too young to understand why they are neglected and/or abused, several don’t even live past 4 years old. In the United States more than 4 children die every day as a result of child abuse or neglect. Approximately 80 percent of children who died from abuse are under 4 years old. In 2011, 78.3 percent of child fatalities were caused by one or more parents.
Parental child abuse results because of various reasons. One reason is if the child was conceived out of wedlock there is a lot of stress towards the parents created by the child’s birth.
Another reason for parental child abuse is military deployment, which causes multiple stressors. One stressor is the that is spouse left behind must take on all responsibilities that was once handled by both parents. Some other stressors are low social support, marital dissatisfaction and low fa...

Child abuse and neglect is a controversial problem that concerns everyone. It has been around for a long time and still goes on today. As Aristotle once said, “Our children hold our future in their hands.” so shouldn’t children should be protected and cared for not abused and neglected. Also by law, as in Section 17 of the Children Act 1979, we all have a duty to safeguard children and protect them from harm.

When children are hurt physically, emotionally, or sexually it is known to be child abuse. Children are known to be neglected when they are not getting the proper attention needed for children. When children are neglected or abused in any way it is the responsibility of others to report such acts to the authorities as to what they have witnessed first-hand or signs of abuse or neglect seen after the fact, these people who reports such acts are known as third parties. The proper authorities to report child abuse or neglect is called Child Protected Services also known as Child Welfare. After the abuse or neglect is reported the proper authorities will then investigate to see if the abuse or neglect is legit or fraudulent (Sedlak, 2001).
Another, key point is that in the UK the statistic for neglect by parent on children is extremely high, (Radford et al, 2011) has said “In England, 18,220 children were the subject of a child protection plan under t...
In several cases the cause of the abuse can be linked to family relationship issues. In the novel Sickened, by Julie Gregory, Gregory recounts her childhood with a mother who was diagnosed with Munchausen By Proxy. She tells the readers that her “mother married at the tender age of nineteen.” Marrying him when she was young caused them to argue with each other and they did not have a genuine relationship. Soon after her first husband’s death it seemed as though she was very desperate to find another husband because she felt isolated and alone, she craved the attention of being in an intimate relationship. Her crave for attention was the fuel for her desire to make Julie sick. A parent is also more likely to mistreat their children if their spouse has very little, or no, input in the family’s activities which leaves it to the abusive parent to control everything. In another situation where family relationships could be an issue, a woman named “Shannon Hudson had been trying to break up with the boys’ [her sons’ abusive] father when he shot her three times. Then shot himself” (Burling A1+). The abuses that lead up to the husband getting angry and frustrated with his wife caused the violent act that was a result of their relationship failure.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 3.3 million referrals for alleged maltreatment were made in 2013. Out of the 3.3 million referrals, 899,000 children were officially documented as being maltreated(Child Abuse & Neglect 2015). Child abuse is the mistreatment of a child. Child abuse is recognized in several forms; physical, emotional, sexual and neglect. Children who experience any form of abuse will tend to withdraw themselves from their peers and sometimes from other family members who are not aware of what is taking place. Child abuse occurs not just in the homes of these children, but can also occur in schools, churches and after school programs. Anywhere a child is present there is a chance that abuse can occur. This paper will review the forms of child abuse, the effects of child abuse, reasons child abuse occurs and possible therapies to bring healing in the parties involved.
Child abuse and neglect are “social” issues that were addressed by the author. While children are in foster care, they may become victims of maltreatment: child neglect, child emotional, physical and sexual abuse. The terms neglect refers to when parents fail to provide a child’s basic needs and provide satisfactory level of care (Downs, Moore and McFadden, 2009). An example of a child being neglected is when parents or c...
Many children suffer at the hands of adults - often their own parents. They are beaten, kicked, thrown into walls, and burned with cigarettes. They have their heads held under the water of toilet bowls, are scalded by hot water or they are forced to stand in freezing showers until they pass out. A child could be stuffed into running washing machines or sexually molested, suffer from neglect in the forms of starvation and lack of medical attention, and still go unnoticed by outsiders. In fact, it is estimated that about five children die every day in the U.S. from some form of child abuse. It is a sickening practice that has no set standard of rules to finish off the persisting problem. Different states have different methods and agencies to help prevent abuse in the home, some work quite well while others bomb - a dangerous gamble when it comes to the life or mental state of a child.
More than 2.5 million cases of child abuse and neglect are reported each year in the United States (Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics). Almost five children die as a result of abuse and more than three out of four are under four years old (Child Abuse: Statistics & Facts). Child abuse is very common amongst families (Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics). One-third of these involve physical abuse and one half involves neglect. Studies show that one in four girls and one in eight to nine boys will be sexually abused before they are 18 years old (Child Abuse: Statistics & Facts).
Child abuse is caused by a parent, for many reasons, and can lead to many kinds of problems for the child. Parents impose child abuse for many reasons such as psychological problems to low self esteem to alcohol or drug abuse.4 Child abuse happens for many different reasons but all the reasons are still child abuse, and are taken seriously. Child abuse can also occur when parents have too high of expectation of their kids which then leads to abuse. "Abusive parents may show disregard for the child's own needs, limited abilities, and feelings."5 Disregarding children's needs can include a neglect ion. Children need parental advice and for parents to fulfill all their needs.
Child abuse is a worldwide problem that is yet to be fixed. Child abuse or in other words maltreatment comes in all different forms, from emotional, sexual abuse, or neglect. Child maltreatment is a serious problem that can have long lasting harmful effects on its victim’s. More than one third of the country’s population, which is around 440 million children suffer from abuse each year, according to a study on child abuse by Ministry of Women and Children Development.
Child maltreatment is a terrible thing to happen to children. It causes over half a million children to be injured, and about 1500 children die annually. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that “In addition to this appalling immediate toll, child abuse is thought to have many harmful long-term consequences.” (NBER 2018). The most common use of child maltreatment is child abuse and
We overlook the symptoms of neglect. This is a mistake because children that are neglected are more at risk for being physically and sexually abused. What an astronomical problem we are facing. Either too much is reported or not enough. In 2005 an estimated 3.3 million cases of abuse were reported in the U.S. of those children 899,000 were confirmed to be victims of abuse or neglect. (Sharples, 2008)Those are not good numbers in either direction there should not be 899,000 cases of abuse and neglect but at the same time there should also not be 2.4 million cases reported that turned out to be nothing.
Munro (2003) states child abuse is treating a child in a way that is harmful or morally wrong however, goes on to explain it is hard to find a universal agreement of the definition of child abuse. NSPCC (2010) further explains child abuse as maltreatment of a child. This can be done directly by inflicting harm or indirectly by failing to prevent harm from happening. Abuse can be perpetrated by an adult or another child. Working Together to Safeguard Children (2013) states that it’s the responsibility of everyone who works with children to make sure that a child is safeguarded and their welfare promoted. The Purpose of this essay is firstly to discuss risk factors posed to Simone and Sasha through the scenario provided and highlight ways a professional should assess whether a child is suffering from an abusive or neglectful situation. Secondly the appropriate action that needs to be taken, and the support that needs to be given, and what services will be involved with the family in order to prevent a family brake down while safeguarding and protecting the children’s welfare, will also be discussed. Lastly this essay will draw on current legislation, guidance and procedures that promote multi– agency working in order to effectively safeguard and promote children’s welfare.
We’ll start with child abuse victims and the affects and reasons of this abuse. There are four types of child abuse and I will list them in order from least to greatest, neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Neglect takes first with the NCVS having 54% reports of child neglect in 2007. Neglect is a very serious form of abuse it is the failure for a parent or guardian to provide for a child’s basic needs, including physical and educational needs. We grow and development drastically in the first twelve years of our life so when parental guidance and love is absent it affects a child’s developmental skills along with learning right from wrong. Many forms of neglect occur in larger households and with households with domestic violence. Many parents with multiple kids become too busy focusing on the older children they tend to forget the youngest one. So it’s common for a three year old to walk out of the front door and on to the street when no one is there to tell him or...
...l parents as soon as the home is safe again. For some cases recurrent maltreatment occurs when the child is reunified with the biological parents or original caregivers. Children who are abused can display behavioral problems which can impact many areas in their life. They tend to act out at school and have low academic performance (Webb, 2007). They may also internalize their behavior by becoming depressed and showing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Child maltreatment not only affects the child that is being abused, but the family system as well. Some acts of child abuse can be prosecuted with criminal charges which could result in jail time and other serious punishments. Children show the affects of their maltreatment throughout their life through their behaviors. Child abuse is a serious problem that needs to be prohibited by all agencies.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) (n.d.), the causes of child abuse are 1) poverty, 2) less education, 3) unemployment, 4) changes in address, 5) marital problems, 6) lack of support, and 7) isolation. These factors are not only individual problems, but also social problems. Also, factors are considered to be interrelated to each other. For instance, parents in poverty are at higher risk of abused their children because they are more likely to struggle with economic problems because of unemployment. They are less likely to have stable jobs because of lack of education.
