When a child is born people normally think of that as a positive and wonderful thing happening in a person’s life. It should be a paternal instinct to love and cherish, and protect this little person’s life. Unfortunately sometimes this is not always the case, and those parents mistreat or allow someone else to mistreat their children. There also those parents that it happens to their child that gets neglected or abused without their knowledge. The issue of child abuse and neglect is something that happens every day to children and ruins their childhood and makes a big impact on them for rest of their life.
Having children requires a lot of attention, time, love, and money among other things to raise them properly. There are some parents who are not willing to put forth this much effort in raising a child. That is sometimes where neglect and abuse start, the parent or parents decides that they really don’t want the child after all. They end up not having enough money like they once had, and the love and affection for their child is lost.
The child of neglect or abuse in their own home from a parent is a child’s worst nightmare. Their parent is the person they are supposed to go for love, protection, and support against the world. To have a parent beat them, or not feed them or to have their parent mentally degrade them is something that happens. Unfortunately, sometimes this is a result of the parent having a drug problem, or they were abused themselves, or they are depressed (Healy, 2013). These parental adults don’t know how to take care of child because they are not mentally capable themselves.

Being a parent is one of the hardest and scariest things in the world. It’s hard to ever think about a parent actually hurting their own flesh and blood. It’s easy to accidentally say something to child that might hurt their feelings. It’s easy to let tempers fly when times are hard, and kids are asking for things that cannot be gotten. That is when things can get out of hand.
The child abuse and neglect is way out of hand. It usually starts with the parents. The parents are to be the adult and take care of their children in the right way. They were blessed from God they day they have their child. People don’t realize that abuse and neglect of those children, isn’t fair. Every child deserves a fair chance at a good life without having to go through any neglect of abuse.
It is important to appreciate that these issues are very complex, and to be familiar with how abuse and neglect can affect various aspects of a person's life. Child abuse does not affect every person the same. The extremity of the abuse and different situations determine the effect. Some people could live on to become great people and do great things. They don’t look at the abuse as something negative but rather as something that made them strong and made them believe that they were better and could do better than the situation that they were in. Dealing with abuse after it is over is the toughest thing to handle, most people that could afford therapy go to it, but since most people can‘t afford it they try to deal with it the best they can. Although in most cases the child is removed from the home that the abuse is happening in, sometimes child abuse can slip by unnoticed and that can have severe consequences on the child as well as others.

Unfortunately it is not noticed until the damage is already done. Parents are the ones that are supposed to take care of their child. Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse is when an adult is punishing a child in a way that will cause him mental trauma (Compton’s). Emotional abuse is terrible for the child’s self-esteem however they can go and learn that they are important to the world by their contributions. Sexual abuse is when a child is touched inappropriately or molested (Compton’s). This is detrimental to a child but in most cases the child will block this out for when they grow older it is like it never happened which will cause no harm to their mental state. Neglect is when an adult will not seek medical help for their child and will not provide them with food, shelter, clothing, or emotional support (Sullivan). Parenting is not instinctive, it must be learned. While this is often done through experience, education courses for individuals prior to their becoming parents, and close evaluation of questionable homes could enhance parents' knowledge and the childrens' well being. A high percentage of abusive parents have histories of physical and emotional abuse inflicted upon them during their childhood. Thus, they were deprived of parents who taught them how to be good parents. Child abuse scenarios that seem tragic to others are ordinary to parents from abusive backgrounds, and often overlooked. The absence of good parents is detrimental to a child's learning how to fulfill parental roles. The children from abusive households think that an abusive environment is normal, correct, and acceptable. They grow up believing that and emulate that lifestyle.

We overlook the symptoms of neglect. This is a mistake because children that are neglected are more at risk for being physically and sexually abused. What an astronomical problem we are facing.
