In the movie For the Love of a Child, it focuses on the complex issue of child abuse and neglect in the United States. Child abuse is still a very prevalent issue not only in the United States but around the world. Each year there are over three million reports of child abuse in the United States, and each day between four and seven children lose their life to child abuse and neglect. Child abuse can be categorized into four sectors; sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. Social workers play a major role in child welfare and dealing with cases of child abuse. According to their studies, they found that on a microeconomic level, when the economy is down then abuse rates go up. They also found that rates of child abuse and neglect are more prevalent in families experiencing economic hardships and high levels of stress.( Lindo, 2013) This would make it plausible to say that because so many minority families live in poverty stricken neighborhoods and deal with certain stresses, that this could be an explanation to this trend. While this is a valid extrapolation to make, it is not fully justified because not only minority families deal with child abuse. Also, not all families that experience instances of child abuse are poor and not all cases of child abuse take place during economic recessions, however it is still important to take into account the social environments and look at how they shape or play a part in the trends. There have also been trends found in the perpetrators of child abuse, according to the article economic conditions and child abuse, men play a role in 62 percent of child abuse cases, whereas women play a role in 41 percent. The job of a child welfare worker appears to be a demanding profession that promotes the child’s safety, but also strengthens the family organization around them in order to successfully raise the children. This child welfare workers work in the system known as the Child Protective Services whose initiative is to protect the overall welfare of the child. The short novel From the Eye of the Storm: the Experiences of a Child Welfare Worker by Cynthia Crosson-Tower demonstrates the skills necessary to deal with the practice of social work along with both its challenges and its happy moments. The novel consists of some of the cases involving Tower’s actual career in social work. In reading the book, I was able to experience some of the actual cases in which children dealt with physical and mental abuse from their families that caused them to end up within the system. Also, some of these children had issues in adapting to foster and adoptive families based on the issues they faced earlier in life. As we have learned earlier in the course, the violence that a child experiences early in life has an overall affect on the person they become as they grow into adulthood. When children deal with adverse childhood experiences, they are at a higher risk for abusing drugs and/or alcohol, increased likelihood of abusing their own child or spouse, higher rates of violent and nonviolent criminal behavior, along with several other issues throughout their lifespan.

I was able to catch an evening show of the shows only two nights held at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn. The stars of the musical are Tony Grant - as Darius Lovehall, and Chrisette Michelle - as Nina Mosley. Singers Musiq Soulchild, MC Lyte, Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem Devaughn, and Dave Hollister played themselves. The musical like the movie takes place in Chicago. The plot was also similar to that of 1997 movie in which Darius a poet and Nina a photographer gets together and fall in love. Trials and tribulations test their relationship, but the couple proved that black love is strong by overcoming their obstacles in the end.

Child abuse cases have been recorded in all the states of the USA. The cases occur in all areas be it cities, small towns, suburbs, and even in rural areas. The vice also happens in all types of families regardless of the ethnic origin of the family or the even family income (UNICEF, 2015). It is thus important that effort is put into reducing cases of child abuse.
Participating in the Mandated Reporter Training is a helpful tool for understanding the role of a social worker as a professional if and when one learns information concerning abuse of a minor. The goal of a social worker is to improve the quality of life for all individuals and if one learns about any type of abuse-physical, sexual, emotional, and/or neglect- it is their responsibility to bring this information to the proper authorities. The training stated that, “Research has shown that when multidisciplinary protocols are followed arrest and prosecution rates increase and trauma to the child decreases” (Arizona Child Abuse Info Center).

Child abuse in the United States is a growing epidemic. Every year the number of reported cases, and missing children go up. This is caused mostly by lack of education about the different types of child abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Communities need to provide more resources to better educate the public about the types of abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Child abuse and neglect can be lessened by more resources, more education and to reach out to others.
Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse is when an adult is punishing a child in a way that will cause him mental trauma (Compton’s). Emotional abuse is terrible for the child’s self-esteem however they can go and learn that they are important to the world by their contributions. This is detrimental to a child but in most cases the child will block this out for when they grow older it is like it never happened which will cause no harm to their mental state. Since the case of Mary Ellen Wilson in 1874, child abuse has seen it’s share of light in published news. It is disheartening to read countless stories of future generations being harmed to the extent of psychological damage or even death. Child abuse as a whole has been addressed multiple times in various news blogs, however, nothing has been done to work towards abolishing it at a larger level. The future of America is in jeopardy based on the level of abuse that children endure. Childhelp states that approximately 5 children die every day at the hands of child abuse. America struggles to find equality, and by bystanding the stripping of its youth, continual prolonging is inevitable. Raising this nation’s children in means of nurturing and care is the first step to uplifting America as a whole. In 2012 alone, 1593 of America’s children died at the hands of child abuse, 70.3% of which were younger than the age of three (Safe Horizon). In order to prevent further child abuse, the American government should address stricter child protection laws, psychological stability, and an increase the recognition of those that have released their stories.
