Children who experience child abuse and neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime. Child abuse is an epidemic in America; it has affected so many homes. Over 2.9 million cases of child abuse are reported every year and sadly not all of the cases are strong enough to get the child out of the home. The book definition of abuse is mistreatment or purposefully harming someone physically or mentally. Tragically many children who are abused think that it is somehow their fault that they are being abused. No form of abuse is acceptable for any child. All children deserve Protection and Love. Some believe that the parent should be able to discipline their child any way they see fit. This argument does have strength to it. If the child is yours and you believe in an alternative method of discipline, who is to tell you it is not right. The government shouldn’t control how you live your life or how you discipline your children. It has more to do with the personal preference of what the parent or relative thinks discipline is. The definition of discipline is: the practice of training people to obey rules or code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. If discipline is described as using punishment to correct disobedience then how can you say abuse is wrong? The parent may just be using their own form of punishment to keep the child from disobeying them. If abuse is described as cruel and violent treatment of a person or animal, what is seen as cruel and violent? Is punching a child or kicking a child violent or is it just another form of discipline? Effects of child abuse can leave many scars such as mental or physical scars, which can have a long lasting impression on someone’s life.
