It is typical when analyzing technology for the presence of chemistry to be hardly noticed or failed to be seen at all. This is a false assessment, and is caused by simply not looking close enough. Chemistry’s presence is not always blatantly obvious, even though it is truly at the root of most all technology we use on a daily basis. One of the fields of technology that we do in fact use on a daily basis that chemistry impacts, and therefore impacts whole other genres of technology, is the battery. Although often taken for granted, the battery is a huge part of the technology we use today and chemistry is integral to it. The advancement of chemistry advances the technology and materials we use to make batteries and therefore advances a wide array of technologies. Better batteries means more powerful and lasting gadgets, and the only way to achieve better batteries is by advancing our understanding of the chemistry involved with batteries. Chemistry does in fact play a necessary part to technology and one way it does this is through the improvement of battery technology and understanding, which therefore improves upon other technologies that utilize batteries.
Before an explanation about how increasing our knowledge of chemistry can improve technology, specifically the battery, a basic understanding of the history and process by which a battery works is required. In order to gauge where technology stands today, you first must understand where the technology started. The first battery, which is known as the Parthian Battery, dates back almost 2000 years. It was a rather weak battery that consisted of a clay jar filled with vinegar that had a copper wrapped iron bar sticking out the top. It is believed it was used for electroplatin...

...ad of burning fossil fuels for cars, we are now able to travel cleanly in electric cars and reduce pollution output. Although this might seem small, it has an enormous impact on our earth as well as our health. Electric cars are just one step we can utilize batteries for a better society, with further improvement upon it, it will expand to even more possible applications. Batteries hold the potential to be part of the solution of the energy problems our world is now facing. In the future it is quite possible it will be unheard of to drive anything other than an electric car. With more powerful battery technology in the future it could expand to even more modes of transportation and processes we use on a daily basis. Research into battery chemistry and technology is a necessary part of today’s technology and is a pathway to a cleaner and more energy efficient future.
