Chemical engineering is one of the oldest and core fields of engineering. You might be wondering what exactly chemical engineering is all about. “Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that applies physical sciences, physics, chemistry, life sciences, microbiology and biochemistry, together with applied mathematics and economics to produce, transform, transport, and properly use chemicals, materials and energy. “Chemical engineers work to improve the quality of people 's lives. Becoming a chemical engineer requires an education in chemical engineering at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Chemical engineers typically hold either a bachelor 's degree (which is four years, with full time courses), master 's degree (ideal for advanced or managerial vocations in chemical engineering), and/or Ph.D. in chemical engineering, for those interested in performing independent or scholarly research (“What Is the Education Required to Become a Chemical Engineer?” n.d.). Most universities require engineering students to successfully complete 36 courses over four years for graduation. These courses include the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) requirement courses such as physics, general chemistry and computer proficiency. Also needed are some advanced science and math requirements; among these courses are calculus, multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, chemistry (300 level), organic, physical, inorganic and bio-chemistry, and molecular biology. Bachelor’s degree chemical engineers usually have their first job related to chemical, pharmaceutical, or biotech operations (Chemical Engineering Degrees & Careers | How to Become a Chemical Engineer. n.d.). This work may be in the field or in an office. Some young engineers work for contracting firms and may be involved in plant design, start-up, troubleshooting, or validation (“FAQs, Chemical Engineering”, n.d.). There are many career paths you can choose once you obtain a chemical engineering degree. Some fields of work for chemical engineers include: Chemical Process Industries (CPI)- Designing and operating reactors, processes, and systems to combine, transport, separate, and recycle chemicals; Biotechnology-Using living cells, cell materials and biological techniques to produce antibiotics, insulin, recombinant DNA, artificial organs, techniques for medical, environmental and nutritional improvements, among other things; Food and Drugs; Advanced Materials-employed in the Aerospace, Automotive, Electronics, Minerals and Imaging sectors to design and control production of advanced polymers, ceramics and hybrid materials for improved performance; Environment, Health and Safety- Every process involving chemicals produces some by-products, and Chemical Engineers control these variables through process monitoring and control, efficient and safe process design, waste treatment, environmental impact studies, etc.;
