Every day working as a nurse at Kaiser Permanente, I have helped numerous of our members on their annual physical exam. How about you? Have you had your annual health check-up this year? Did you really do it? If you have a check-up one every year, do you actually know if it is completed? Do you understand the screening tests and examinations you have done? Most of you will answer “no” to at least one of these questions. What is a comprehensive annual physical exam? A comprehensive physical exam is a once-a-year routine screening being done for a general health check even if you feel healthy. It includes preventive health procedures such as mammogram, blood lipid profile, or a check for prostate cancer .The exams and screenings you need will depend on your age, family health history, and lifestyle choices including diet, physical activity level, smoking and drinking alcohol. Timely identification of health problems, which means no more excuses and to take an action to make an appointment with your doctor before it’s too late. Annual physical exams provide the early detection of serious illnesses, the prevention of expensive treatment, wellness maintenance and provide you a more complete picture of your overall health.
Why does everyone a needs regular physical exam? We need to have annual exam to provide early detection of serious illnesses. Why is early diagnosis important? Obtaining an early and accurate diagnosis is the key for any diseases to be cured or successfully managed. According to the National Cancer Institute, the sooner cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better a person’s chance for a full recovery. Improved tracking of preventive health tests – i.e., patient’s age cross-referenced with tests needing to be performed; also tracking when last tests/exams were performed.
In the United States, nutrition screening is a part of inpatient admission. The Joint Commission requires a nutritional screening to be completed within 24 hours of inpatient admission (Treas & Willkinson, 2014). Proper nutrition is important for staying healthy and is particularly vital for the elderly. For the purpose of this week discussion this learner will concentrate on explaining the health status of a 81 year old patient who presented at the primary care for a routine visit. We observed the patient height is around 72 inches and weight is 135 ponds. We will calculate the patient Body mass index (BMI) and interpret the result. In addition two specific assessments will be perform and included the rationale for each one.

On admission to a healthcare facility, a health assessment is a mandatory tool in assessing the patient’s health status. In general an assessment is broken down in a two types of reviews, by conducting a health history which includes the collection of subjective data (information elicited by the patient or patients family members) and a physical examination of the patient which includes the gathering of evidence based data (Wilson & Giddens, 2009). Collecting and documenting accurate information is imperative in providing the allied health team this information to facilitate an efficient and well-formed care plan, as well establishing a baseline for subsequent assessments (Springhouse, 2004; Wilson & Giddens, 2009).

There are many people in the world that are afraid of getting sick. People fear in developing fatal sickness in their lifetime. Cancer-the big C—will often top the list. Brody,H.(2011). Cancer Prevetion.Nature,471(7339). Patients that have been diagnosed with cancer and are using treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy and surgery have already had their cancer progressed. In order to avoid such conditions, people need to be pro active and often check themselves. In order to prevent and develop cancer it is recommended by cancer specialists to follow up with medical visits every so often. Although both male and female have potential of acquiring cancer. There are multiple ways one can prevent cancer and that is to improve diet, increase ones activity, avoid carcinogens, and perform cancer screenings. Who usually acquire cancer? Male or female? People with low education are the ones to have cancer due to having not insurance.
Although medical checkups remain vital to the general health status of a person, the medical world is divided over the issue. Some school of thought advises that adults should submit to a yearly medical checkup. Others take the view that regular medical check-up is not critical with no inherent family or genetic medical conditions in one’s family. A number of insurance companies practice preventive care
