Charles Dickens takes the Victorian clothing concept into great consideration and uses it splendidly throughout all his amazing works of literature. It it also one reason why Charles Dickens is such a renowned author. One great example of how Charles Dickens uses this Victorian clothing concept is in the novel “Great Expectations.” In the novel, there are a great number of character descriptions. In addition, Dickens seems to play with his character’s appearances by dressing them according to their given social class. To give a better understanding of the Victorian class structure, an article by Leslie Gregory gives a great explanation. The explanation is as follows: The middle class who emerged as a result of this radical shift in England’s economic base were a diverse group, representing a broad range of economic statuses, from modest farmer, shopkeeper, merchant, and skilled artisan to banker, bureaucrat, manufacturer, and industrialist (Gregory).
However, some characters such as Pip, Miss Havisham, and Magwitch have a deeper meaning behind the clothes they are wearing. In other words, the characters of Pip, Miss Havisham, and Magiwitch can be further analyzed of whether or not their clothes fit with their true character, and have any sort of symbolism and/or purpose in the novel. When Pip first encounters the escaped convict in the graveyard, the tense relationship between them is obvious to the reader, but all is revealed in chapter 39, where the readers meet both Pip and the convict again, and witness a role-reversal between them. The weather in the novel is significant; Dickens describes it in such a way that it creates an atmosphere using foreboding ominous imagery. This story of a lonely orphan in a mixed up world provides plenty of opportunities to consider the difficultly of an impoverished childhood in the nineteenth century and how hard it might have been for such a naïve and gullible young boy to survive in this time, especially with such harsh family circumstances. Firstly, Miss Havisham's was a significant impact on Pip's life. The houses were a clear representation of your class throughout this novel. As well as houses, clothing was another large give away of what class you belonged to. The higher classes would have elaborate and expensive clothes which they would change three or four times a day, while as on the other hand the poor, if they were lucky, had three or four outfits in their whole wardrobe. The representation of this is clearly seen in the novel when Pip goes to buy new presentable clothes and is startled by the difference in the quality of clothing that the higher classes would wear. Throughout the novel it is clear of the social classes just by how Dickens describes their dress style.
