Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol has three main themes in the book that really stand out. The main character that will be talked about is Ebenezer Scrooge and how he transforms throughout the book. Scrooge is known as a grump of a man and very kept to himself. In the story the ghosts of past, present, and future come into contact with Scrooge and take him through their stages. While Scrooge is receiving the Ghosts help It they take him through him isolating himself from people and the world, the ghost of christmas present shows transformation and last but not least, the ghost of christmas past shows Scrooge and his compassion and forgiveness. Dickens does a great job in the final pages of A Christmas Carol by showing great compassion and forgiveness. Not only did Scrooge decide to transform from isolating himself from the outside world but he has forgiven and embraced this. However not only did he forgive himself and other but others forgave him. "It should be Christmas Day, I am sure," said she, "on which one drinks the health of such an odious, stingy, hard, unfeeling man as Mr. Scrooge. You know he is, Robert! Nobody knows it better than you do, poor fellow!". "My dear," was Bob 's mild answer, "Christmas Day."."I 'll drink his health for your sake and the Day 's," said Mrs. Cratchit, "not for his. Long life to him! A merry Christmas and a happy new year! He 'll be very merry and very happy, I have no doubt!". (Dickens 37). Bob Cratchit is Scrooge 's employee and is not treated well or payed well. Bob shows he still cares for this man and has sympathy but however his wife does not. Bob has been with Scrooge for so long he knows that Scrooge has nobody in his life, christmas is when you are suppose to be with your family. Looking back on the text "My dear," was Bob 's mild answer, "Christmas Day." Bob tells his wife this is time for love and not hate. Scrooge realizes what isolation has caused, When the ghost of christmas present shows him the future and it is not promising. The story starts off with isolation being the first main theme and how scrooge chose to withdraw himself from everyone and when he wanted different it was almost like he was stuck in isolation. When it was Scrooge 's time to change he stepped up to the plate and he endured the challenge. Last but not least compassion and forgiveness, this was the main theme throughout the book and also this paper. Scrooge was never a man to have either one of those qualities but seeing the man he has become transformed him. It is clear that the themes all fall into place to each other and connect, despite how they all have different
