When someone thinks of slavery, they automatically come to the conclusion of the expected relationship of a slave and his master, the master treats his slave with cruelty and disregards the slaves human nature. For most cases of slavery, this is primarily the foundation of the relationship, however sometimes it goes deeper than what is common. In Fifty Years in Chains by Charles Ball, there are so many aspects of slavery illustrated throughout, but the most prominent is the dynamics of the relationships between the slaves and their owners. As the relationship between these two figures is ultimately the same across the table, each relationship has its own characteristics making it unique from the other. Rather than identifying the relationship with the direct slave owner, we will begin with that of the mistresses and the slaves. The mistress is the master’s wife, who constantly resides on the estate. With that being, she tends to become very well acquainted with all of the slaves on the plantation. She does most of the caring for the slaves, maintaining their health and happiness to her furthest ability. The mistress often comes between the master and slave and prevents them from being innocently beaten. Charles Ball communicates a time in Maryland when his mistresses “were all good women,” especially that of his wife, whom he claimed was a lady of “most benevolent and kindly feelings” ( pg. 48). This may not be the direct relationship between a slave owner and his slave, however the mistress is the wife of the owner, and his wife she could most commonly be expected to retain the same mindset and opinions on the matter of slavery. However, as described by Ball, some of the mistresses he had encountered were women who practically befriended the slaves and treated them with respect and fairness in comparison to the ways of the owner
Sometimes for no reason at all and other times because of a certain act that the slave did. When a slave owner punishes his slaves he takes into account a few factors. He decides the severity of the crime, he take into account the effect it will have on himself, and the effect it will have on his farm. No matter who the person is, male or female, the slave will indeed pay for any crime that they commit. Several different punishment styles are described in Ball’s narrative, from lashing with a “roasted and greased hickory gad” ( pg. 87) to lashing with a ten foot long whip made of buckskin twisted together to form a twine like firmness, some tie their slaves to a post and others have them lay on the ground to proceed with the allotted lashes. When the owner takes into account his farm, he realizes that he has to make a limit on the amount of lashes one can receive before they are deemed incapable of working. Depending on the criminal, the owner could lose profit from his farm because he could be short two of his best hands. However, sometimes the master forgets all else but the crime itself and enforces the strongest most detrimental punishment to teach his lesson through the means of direct payback, majority of the time the slave will even plead guilty but the master does not trust in the words of the criminal. At first glance, the book “my bondage and my freedom by Frederick Douglass appeared to be extremely dull and frustrating to read. After rereading the book for a second time and paying closer attention to the little details I have realized this is one of the most impressive autobiographies I have read recently. This book possesses one of the most touching stories that I have ever read, and what astonishes me the most about the whole subject is that it's a true story of Douglass' life. “ Douglass does a masterful job of using his own experience to expose the injustice of slavery to the world. As the protagonist he is able to keep the reader interested in himself, and tell the true story of his life. As a narrator he is able to link those experiences to the wider experiences of the nation and all society, exposing the corrupting nature of slavery to the entire nation.”[1] Although this book contributes a great amount of information on the subject of slavery and it is an extremely valuable book, its strengths are overpowered by its flaws. The book is loaded with unnecessary details, flowery metaphors and intense introductory information but this is what makes “My Bondage and My Freedom” unique.
To understand the desperation of wanting to obtain freedom at any cost, it is necessary to take a look into what the conditions and lives were like of slaves. It is no secret that African-American slaves received cruel and inhumane treatment. Many plantation owners were men that wanted their plantation ran in a particular manner. They strove to have control over all aspects of their slaves’ lives. Stephanie Camp said, “Slave holders strove to create controlled and controlling landscapes that would determine the uses to which enslaved people put their bodies.” Mary Reynolds was not a house slave, but her master’s daughter had a sisterly love towards her, which made the master uncomfortable. This shows that he uses the Bible to justify his pain and suffering onto the slave who does not obey her master. Douglass states, “I assert most unhesitatingly, that the religion of the south is a mere covering for the most horrid crimes, --- a justifier of the most appalling barbarity,--- a sanctifier of the most hateful frauds--- and a dark shelter under, which the darkest , foulest, grossest, and most infernal deeds of slaveholders find the strongest protection” (117). For completing these horrid crimes, slaveholders don’t feel bad for their sinful deeds because they feel like scriptures in the Bible support their abuse. In the narrative, Douglass explains how female slaves were victimized because of they were weaker and easier to abuse.
From the beginning of the chapter one Douglass mentioned his separation from his origin, from his parents, therefore he did not ‘know’ himself. He was kept from the knowledge of his position in society. In first paragraph of chapter one, I noticed more than eight rhetorical expressions of negative views- “I have no,” “I could not,” “seldom,” “never” etc. These statements shows his big gap of his deprivation of knowledge. The young Douglass lived in the society neither a human nor an animal. Thus whites prevented him to build his own “self” and dehumanized him. W.E.B. DuBois introduces the idea of “Double-consciousnes”, he admits, “this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that’s looks on in amused contempt and pity.”(…) Douglass always fought with his inner feelings, and struggled to combine his inner self with his outer self. He always wanted to change his position. In the second half of the book he tried to grab the power of knowledge, and his position changed. He focused on literacy and language and became a teacher. He started to write and read and started to connect his intellectual mind with his speech and action. It was his first turning point, and this attempt awakening his mind. Slowly he was breaking the invisible wall around him, and tried to find the path to build his identity. Thus the second half of the book, in his journey his searching knowledge made him to say, “ I used to speak,”(77) “I told him,”(56) “I would tell them,” (57). “I said” etc. His masters started to hear Douglass’ voice who used to play a role of silent audience.
Frederick Douglass, in his autobiography, singles out the atrocities of the “Peculiar Institution”, from foul to barbarous. In The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass An American Slave, former slave turned abolitionist, Frederick Douglass (1845) states that many masters treated their slaves cruelly. Douglass (1845) tells of many instances of this inimical treatment. One horror is that many slave women were raped by their white master and then bore them children (p. 2-3) . Douglass' mother might have experienced this (p.2-3). Another was the inhumane ways that slaves were punished, ways such as whipping, having them killed, horribly beaten and many others (p.14-15). Author Fergus M. Bordewich in his book Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America, tells of more atrocious forms of punishment. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave details the progression of a slave to a man, and thus, the formation of his identity. The narrative functions as a persuasive essay, written in the hopes that it would successfully lead to “hastening the glad day of deliverance to the millions of [his] brethren in bonds” (Douglass 331). As an institution, slavery endeavored to reduce the men, women, and children “in bonds” to a state less than human. The slave identity, according to the institution of slavery, was not to be that of a rational, self forming, equal human being, but rather, a human animal whose purpose is to work and obey the whims of their “master.” For these reasons, Douglass articulates a distinction between the terms ‘man’ and ‘slaves’ under the institution of slavery. In his narrative, Douglass describes the situations and conditions that portray the differences between the two terms. Douglass also depicts the progression he makes from internalizing the slaveholder viewpoints about what his identity should be to creating an identity of his own making. Thus, Douglass’ narrative depicts not simply a search for freedom, but also a search for himself through the abandonment of the slave/animal identity forced upon him by the institution of slavery.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth-century, notions of freedom for Black slaves and White women were distinctively different than they are now. Slavery was a form of exploitation of black slaves, whom through enslavement, lost their humanity and freedom, and were subjected to dehumanizing conditions. African women and men were often mistreated through similar ways, especially when induced to labor, they would eventually become a genderless individual in the sight of the master. Despite being considered “genderless” for labor, female slaves suddenly became women who endured sexual violence. Although a white woman was superior to the slaves, she had little power over the household, and was restricted to perform additional actions without the consent of their husbands. The enslaved women’s notion to conceive freedom was different, yet similar to the way enslaved men and white women conceived freedom. Black women during slavery fought to resist oppression in order to gain their freedom by running away, rebel against the slaveholders, or by slowing down work. Although that didn’t guarantee them absolute freedom from slavery, it helped them preserve the autonomy and a bare minimum of their human rights that otherwise, would’ve been taken away from them. Slavery is a term that can create a whirlwind of emotions for everyone. During the hardships faced by the African Americans, hundreds of accounts were documented. Harriet Jacobs, Charles Ball and Kate Drumgoold each shared their perspectives of being caught up in the world of slavery. There were reoccurring themes throughout the books as well as varying angles that each author either left out or never experienced. Taking two women’s views as well as a man’s, we can begin to delve deeper into what their everyday lives would have been like. Charles Ball’s Fifty Years in Chains and Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl were both published in the early 1860’s while Kate Drumgoold’s A Slave Girl’s Story came almost forty years later
Frederick Douglass, the author of the book “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, said “I saw more clearly than ever the brutalizing effects of slavery upon both slave and slaveholder” (Douglass, p.71). Modern people can fairly and easily understand the negative effects of slavery upon slave. People have the idea of slaves that they are not allow to learn which makes them unable to read and write and also they don’t have enough time to take a rest and recover their injuries. However, the negative effects upon slaveholder are less obvious to modern people. People usually think about the positive effects of slavery upon slaveholder, such as getting inexpensive labor. In the book “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass also shows modern readers some brutalizing impact upon the owner of the slaves. He talks about Thomas Auld and Edward Covey who are his masters and also talks about Sophia Auld who is his mistress. We will talk about those three characters in the book which will help us to find out if there were the negative influences upon the owner of the slaves or not. Also, we will talk about the power that the slaveholders got from controlling their slaves and the fear that the slaveholders maybe had to understand how they were changed.

From the tiny and cramped spaces of the slaves boats that traveled the seas, where the descendants of king and queens, but soon as these slaves made it to the new world they were devalued and dehumanize because of the rich melanin that was embedded in them. This new land that the boat people deemed as home, was strange and unfamiliar to the slaves, which forced the slaves to adopt and adapt to the ways of the new world. Forced into slavery, these slaves had no chose, since the day they stepped foot of the boat they were looked at as a commodity and not a human being. Furthermore, the slave was nothing but a laborer and all they knew for centuries was work, for generations they had no sense of freedom and was used day in and day out to help supply and build the world we know today. Today we live in the world that our ancestors built and for no longer will the story of the slave be silenced; their stories deserved to be told full out through anal and fabric of history itself.
