Characteristics of a Good Leader A good leader is not defined by his title but by his or her character. God grant that men of principle should be the principal man. (Thomas Jefferson) There are many characteristics that define a good leader such as humility, integrity and discipline these three characteristics are important foundational principles to lead with great character. Humility is a key ingredient to a good leader, when a leader truly understands the importance of humility one will never have an issue of helping someone else better themselves. “Leaders must emulate the behavior they expect of others, holding themselves to the same standards they want the staff to meet. When one walks in integrity one will always need to know when one must need to assess the current situation in make the right decision for oneself and the company or organization that one works for. A leader will always “feel that gut-wrenching, darker side of human behavior whether it concerns plagiarism, dishonesty, cheating, bias and apathy, one will and is not immune.” (Cipriano, 2015, p. #). As a leader one must still use good judgement on the decisions that we make as leaders, there is a scripture that says “and of perfect men is the strong food, who because of the use are having the senses exercised, unto the discernment both of good and of evil.” (YLT Hebrews 5:14) When we walk in integrity we lead by example. When we are honest as leader’s others will follow. For example, a lady while working as a contract worker for a hospital was one day asked to go to lunch with one of her co-workers, and while going to lunch she said, “hey let’s have a drink, we are at lunch no one will know.” Although this may have been true if she would have yielded and said yes she later could have affected not only her position at work but also her patients. Walking in integrity as a leader not only edifies one’s self but also everyone who is connected to him or
Keeping a calm, cool, and collected attitude, even when curveballs are thrown, signifies a strong leader. When an egregious amount of errors or flaws occur during a project, a poor leader will be effected by it negatively and lose control of their team. A poor leader gets frustrated, angry, or even depressed during periods of struggles. An effective leader, notwithstanding, remains composed, and they will not allow even the worst of setbacks to affect their leadership style.
Let it be clear that no book will tell us the optimal way of leading, the best way of organizing subordinates, however, we need to realize that successful leaders have all something in common, their actions speak louder than their words, and that these actions are all guided by integrity. The emerging leader should in the end be able to build a character dependent on integrity. The character should be built by the core values we stand for, by our vision’s context, and what’s most important, we should always keep in mind, that “nothing is worse than losing trust, as it will mark our reputation”.
When I think of a good leader I think Influence, confidence, fearlessness, challenges, disappointments, and responsibilities. Sometimes, being a leader comes with hard decisions, but it’s your responsibility to make those decisions hoping they are the right decisions for your company. Being one of the most powerful and influential companies today that a lot of people depend on for internet searches. Admiring the strong organizational culture that includes values of creativity, simplicity and innovation which plays a great success and gives the company an advantage over other companies. The company is known for its organizational distinctiveness and uniqueness amongst the competitors. An important part in a company is integrity which ensures the principals that make most of the decisions and the right ones. “To key for leaders is to determine what would be a useful map given their particular goals
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human understanding. It doesn’t seem like much, but for a majority of people it can be almost impossible. These qualities alone listed above are some of many important qualities that will allow a leader to inspire and guide a group of people towards goals successfully.
A leader is an individual who leads or guides others or who is in charge or command of others. A leader has to have specific traits that make a good leader. These include respect, optimism, praises others and gives credit, and completes the tasks given to them, etc. I believe a great leader is Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
In 480 BC, a legendary war between 300 spartans and 700 thespians fought a persian army of two million. That day when the odds were not in the spartan favor. The spartan king Leonidas lead thoes men into battle knowing that they will die, but did with such passion and love for war that his soldiers stood by him every second of that memorable final stand. When it comes to the question what qualities makes a good person a good leader, it boils down to what that person is willing to do for others and what they are willing to sacrifice for them. To understand how a good person can be a good leader there has to be reference on what qualities a good person and a good leader have.
In my opinion, a true leader looks out for and motivates his subordinates. As a result, the leader gets the very best from his workers. A leader is not afraid of conflict because a leader handles conflict professionally and works to find a solution that benefits the team. A great leader makes decisions that are in the best interest of the group. A great leader keeps the lines of communication open because a great leader understands that he does not know everything.
“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” — Douglas MacArthur (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kevinkruse/2012/10/16/quotes-on-leadership/)
Before I start on the importance of Humility, I want to start with its definition “Humility is the noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself” In this book it talks about the importance of humility in leadership and life. I will be discussing what humility means and how to achieve it, and its importance to leadership.
Jack Welch once said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” This quote summarizes what it is to be a great leader. The goal is always to improve others, not for one's own selfish desires. It takes a plethora of qualities to be a great leader, but the three most important characteristics are: courage, selflessness, and optimism.
There are many definitions of leadership and opinions on the characteristics need to provide decent, effective leadership. However in order to define the characteristics of a good leader, we must first define leadership. By definition leadership is a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc.; the time when a person holds the position of leader; or the power or ability to lead other people (Leadership, n.d.). A leader is often seen as someone who has made exceptional accomplishments educationally and professionally. A leader is often one who is able to provide direction within the organization by articulating the mission, vision, values and purpose of the group or organization to help build its infrastructure. The leader is also responsible for building the commitment of the group or organizations members by building a great relationship with its members and creating a level of trust and accountability. Upon determining the directions of the group and gaining their trust the leader must finally align all stakeholders on a common ground (Martin & Ernst, 2005).
There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. To be a leader you also need to have certain qualities like being sociable, intelligent, have patience to deal with situations. A leader needs to be motivated or they will be a failure. I think I show leader ship all the time inside and outside of school. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way (John C. Maxwell).
“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, No real success is possible, No matter it is on a section gang, A football field, in the army, or in a office,””Dwight D, Eisenhower”. What this meant to me is that a leader is made up of integrity, no matter where they are at, they will work just as hard no matter what. These are the word i live by and this is my story.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
There are many characteristics that describe a leader but in this case I chose 5 of my favorite characteristics of a leader. I briefed it down to 5 because not all characteristics out there can really describe to you how a leader is because you didn’t have an opinion on it. In this case I had a part in it and I had to look carefully at each word I chose. The characteristics I chose was; honest, caring, resourceful, organized, and independent and I’ll describe how these 5 characteristics are the most important to have while being a leader in my opinion.
