There are different people in this world, from varying extremes, some come are timid in their ways and like to stay to themselves, some are outgoing and the popular type that like to be in the center of attention and go to parties. And then I feel that there is a third type of person, a person that understands what he needs to do, when it needs to be done, and gets things done no matter the type of hardship one would face to see such things finish out. I am talking about people that live their lives with valor, courage, and braveness. This brings me to a few questions that I believe a few people would ask about the movie “True Grit”, the courage Mattie possessed was it physical, moral, or both; would I be one to describe Rooster as a brave man; and with a change of main character from the 1969 version to the 2010 version is there a difference in who the story believes has “grit”.
To begin with, the main character of the film for 2010, Mattie, was her courage one of physical, moral origins, or was it a little bit of both physical and moral combined together? I believe that Mattie was courageous morally, she seemed to be a lot like she professed

Mattie being the strong willed fourteen-year-old that is head strong about bringing her father’s killer to justice, and showing that her courage was more than just an act to get Rooster to go after Tom. I also saw that Rooster really was a brave character seeing as to how he was not timid about going after a man that he knew needed to be brought to justice and be tried for what crimes he committed. As well as the differences between main characters of the original film and the remake, I saw that with the first one it showed that Rooster was the one with all the grit, and in the remake it showed that both Rooster and Mattie contain grit and that together they were a pretty good team to go after
First of all, in plot, the works share the same event progression. An early start, a determined drive, a final showdown, and an attempt to continue the achievement. The intentions were to simply accomplish no matter what the circumstance. The Old Man set out early in the morning as indicated here, '…he began to row out of the harbour in the dark.'; In True Grit, Mattie, a girl bent on avenging her father's death, Rooster, a federal marshal, and LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger, set off when, 'It was still dark outside and bitter cold although mercifully there was little wind.'; The dedication involved in the characters' pursuits becomes more evident later on. 'He is a great fish,'; the old man told himself, 'and I must convince him not to learn his strength…'; As it was also with the Mattie from True Grit. 'I knew both of them (Rooster and LaBoeuf) were waiting for me to complain or say something that would make me out to be a 'tenderfoot.' I was determined not to give them anything to chaff me about.'; Her intents were not purely superficial though. Her anger toward '… a coward going by the name of Tom Chaney,'; was a key factor in driving her to achieve her purpose. Finally, after toiling with the fish, the Old Man, '…took all his pain and what was left of his strength and his long gone pride and he put it against the fish's agony,'; in his last bout with the great fish. The same sort of event occurs at the same point in the story line in True Grit. 'Rooster said, 'Fill your hand you son of a bitch!' and he took the reins in his teeth and pulled the other saddle revolver and drove his spurs into the flanks of his strong horse Bo and charged directly at the bandits.
One of the main aspects of grit is having to force oneself to keep going. In the movie, The
Racial tension and cultural barriers has been a constant within our county and the rest of the world for as long as time has been around. Being segregation, to racial riots and sometimes even worse events can occur which has been proven by history in the past. Director Spike Lee’s 1989 film “Do the Right Thing” is a movie set in New York City neighborhood that is filled with many different cultures and ethnic groups being an Italian pizza shop, an Asian general store, an African American housing and residents. Sociology places a main role within the film in which we see how every person goes about their day. Peace and conflict are at an ever increasing war with each other. Above this the film takes place on only one day which happens to be the hottest day of the summer. The observation that we the audience make out is the highest tension is between the Italians and the African Americans. Granted, there are some that get along but for the most part the conflict is there. Whereas the Asian family in the film is the side group in which they are not shown in many scenes throughout the film. Spike Lee does a phenomenal job in portraying the races the way he see it from his perspective. The neighborhood
“It takes courage to grow up and find who you really are” (e.e. cummings). In Finding Forrester, Jamal shows a large amount of courage. He goes to the public school and gains a new friend who is Forrester. Jamal encourages Forrester to step out of his comfort zone and leave his house; therefore, he is showing a lot of courage because of Jamal. Forrester also pushes Forrester to step out of his comfort zone at the same time. In a variety of ways, Forrester forces Jamal to improve his writing. All throughout the movie, courage is shown by just about every character in their own personal ways. In Finding Forrester, courage depends on the person it is being held by and how they will choose to overcome the conflict.
Q1: The argument suggests courage be defined based on, the actions of an individual and the situation they are placed in. Someone could be put into the same situation and act on the situation differently based on experience, knowledge, desperation, and the meaning of the action or situation to an individual.(192c1-3-192d7) Someone with more knowledge will act more accordingly to a difficult situation if they know what their chances are in succeeding in that action or the consequences attempting it. Courage is a representation of bravery. If someone stands up for something not only to benefit them but to
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
To be courageous you cannot be deterred by possible outcomes that may involve danger or pain. To be courageous you have to be more than brave you have to be undaunted and have a heart of a lion. Through Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird courage and determination are embedded through the character’s actions. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb County, explains to his son Jem, “I wanted him to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see if through no matter what.(Lee 149)” Through this quote Harper Lee is trying to convey that, real courage is more than appearance it is a significant action
Mattie is a main character in the book so I thought that she would stay the same for the book and the movie. I had pictured Mattie as a stubborn hard headed 14 teen year old with true grit. But when I watched the movie I think it changed Mattie it made her character soft and not the same as in the book. She also was told she was ugly a couple time during the book so I had a clear picture in my head what Mattie was like. I liked the Mattie from the book better then the Mattie from the movie, but in the move I think it makes her look soft. Hailee Steinfeld is the person that played Mattie in the movie and if you look at a picture of her in my opinion she was to pretty to play Mattie.
In conclusion, true courage is shown in the story in many different ways by many different characters. There was not just one protagonist in this story who turns out to be a hero. In this story we had two plots. Each of the plots contained many heroic characters who not only did what they deemed morally just, but put their life behind what they believed in. Whether physically or mentally exerting themselves, almost every character, showed qualities like Martin Luther King Jr. They made bold statements in the community. They sent out messages that people would not forget. It is unfortunate that only now can we admire these type of people for what they did. Thankfully, they are remembered for their courage and that is what makes these characters world famous.
"Courage." Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 12 Apr. 2017. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout learns about courage from Mrs. Dubose, Jem, and Boo Radley. Courage maybe defined as above but I believe that it has more definitions depending on the situation for example Mrs. Dubose fights her addiction shows a different form of courage than Jem when he fights Bob Ewell and Boo Radley when he fights the religion forced on him by his brother.
The world of Stephen Crane's fiction is a cruel, lonely place. Man's environment shows no sympathy or concern for man; in the midst of a battle in The Red Badge of Courage "Nature had gone tranquilly on with her golden process in the midst of so much devilment" (89). Crane frequently anthropomorphizes the natural world and turns it into an agent actively working against the survival of man. From the beginning of "The Open Boat" the waves are seen as "wrongfully and barbarously abrupt and tall" (225) as if the waves themselves had murderous intent. During battle in The Red Badge of Courage the trees of the forest stretched out before Henry and "forbade him to pass. After its previous hostility this new resistance of the forest filled him with a fine bitterness" (104). More omnipresent than the mortal sense of opposition to nature, however, is the mortal sense of opposition to other men. Crane portrays the Darwinian struggle of men as forcing one man against another, not only for the preservation of one's life, but also the preservation of one's sense of self-worth. Henry finds hope for escape from this condition in the traditional notion that "man becomes another thing in a battle"‹more selfless and connected to his comrades (73). But the few moments in Crane's stories where individuals rise above self-preservation are not the typically heroicized moments of battle. Crane revises the sense of the heroic by allowing selfishness to persist through battle. Only when his characters are faced with the absolute helplessness of another human do they rise above themselves. In these grim situations the characters are reminded of their more fundamental opp...
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
There’s two characteristics that show others how successful one will be. In addition, everyone’s heresy is that it’s IQ’s, social intelligence, good health, or physical looks, but they’re wrong. It’s neither of those things, it’s G.R.I.T. and growth mindsets. Grit means to have growth to have tenacity. Growth mindsets mean to be able to accept failure, and not blame others for things that were under their control. Having grit and growth mindset are two characteristics that will help one achieve in academics, personal life, and career.
what is Grit? Grit is firmness of character or having an indomitable spirit, in other words grit is believing in ourselves and having hunger to succeed. I believe grit is something real and truly makes a difference in anything you do. In the passage the “Significance of Grit” Angela Duckworth speaks about how some people have a trait that leads them to succeed over others and she calls it grit. Me being a student,I can totally see where she is coming from because you need to have an internal flame that roars inside of you to see what you are actually capable of. I had never really heard of the word grit in the academic world until taking this class, I thought grit and being smart where the same thing but that’s not the case.I believe everyone shares this trait but they show it in different tasks Many times I have been resilient and gritty in an academic environment without even knowing.
Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. Courage plays a very large role in the plot of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. There are many different acts of courage throughout the novel, but the most courageous act comes from a character that is arguably more courageous than superman, Atticus Finch. Atticus literally defines courage. He stands up for justice, even when he knows that there is no possibility of winning. Scout Finch, the offspring of Atticus, also shows signs of courage throughout the novel. She especially shows true courage in dire situations. A character that shows signs of courage that we don’t really notice until the end of the novel is Mrs. Dubose, who is very mean to the kids because of a battle she is fighting on the inside.
