Imagine being a student again in middle or high school, now imagine some of the challenges that you faced every day. Some of those challenges may have included struggling with grades, fear of bullies and self-expression. These are common problems faced by every day students but there is a simple solution. Changing public and private school policies to make school uniforms mandatory. Uniforms create a positive effect not only on the school’s environment but also on the lives of the individual students. The main purpose of children attending school is to gain an education and necessary social skills that will help raise them into mature adults. David E. Minimum distractions and appropriate classroom behavior are major factors that make up a class rooms environment. Students would retain more quality information during class if the classroom was a more stable environment. David Kommer, author of Beyond Fashion Patrol, elaborates upon the idea of that having a specified school outfit would increase the chances of students respecting their peers and their teachers. He show’s this when he said school uniforms “develop a sense of school pride and connectedness” (Kommer 24). Some students may feel like they’ve been ostracized by their peers causing them to feel abandoned and alone. Uniforms in the school would develop school pride and connectedness causing students to feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves, a community.
