Changes of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

“My dearest partner of greatness” (I, v, 10) suggests to the reader or audience of the play Macbeth, that these two partners, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, worked together and truly believed in the greatness of their work. This is not so. Said here in a letter from Macbeth to Lady Macbeth telling her that the king is coming soon. There Macbeth truly feels that Lady Macbeth is his partner in all these truly great events. The letter shows us of the close relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and shows us that the deepest secrets of the heart were revealed to each other.

It is from this point that we meet the true character of Lady Macbeth. She immediately shows herself as a domineering, strong willed and ambitious wife to Macbeth.

As the play moves along we see that his wife easily persuades Macbeth, but when Macbeth is alone he has his doubts. Macbeth is less ambitious than his wife and also more softhearted, together these two traits gave him the common sense not to commit the dreaded act. Yet, when the subject of murdering Duncan comes up again, Lady Macbeth weakens his resolve and persuades him to do the deed.

The actors characters begin to change once the deed is done. Macbeth, who was strong inside is now internally traumatised, but only display his feeling in front of his wife. It’s not the best thing to do because lady Macbeth is uninterested in what she considers his pettiness. It also give lady Macbeth the added stress that Macbeth not let his thoughts and imagination get the better of him in front of other people. Yet, she also has to play the soft heartedness expected of a woman, when confronted with the death of Duncan, the day after the murder, in front of the other courts men. He is a great man, falling down. Gone is the softness in his heart, now there is only stone. The death of his wife cannot move him, and he knows he is defeated.

Macbeth’s character has changed from being a brave warrior, faithful to the king with a hidden ambition to become great in the eyes of the world. Lady Macbeth was ambitious to become the head, the top through her husband. There is no feminist softness I her. Now the roles have almost been switched. Macbeth just wants his life secure and uses violence to achieve this. He’s a hard man whose heart will not break with the cries of a tormented child. Lady Macbeth is a mere creature of the powerful woman she was. She is useless and traumatised from her own self.

Both Macbeth and lady Macbeth ruined their life and opportunities with a foolish act. At the end they both regret it.
