Reigeluth and Gerfinkle’s model of systematic change suggest that the whole structure of an organization must be modified in order for changes to occur. This can be compared to a jigsaw puzzle. One item cannot be moved without changing another item. Changes within a school organization are usually made on a case-by-case basis so Reigeluth and Garfinkle propose that the school complete an entire reconstruction including the learning experiences, the instructional systems, and the governance systems (Reigeluth, 1994).
The obstacles SBTRP High School can only be alleviated with a complete systematic change that includes restricting the school from the ground up. The administration will have to reconstruct the curriculum, the way teachers are evaluated, transitioning staff members, and the way the school accesses external resources to help at risk students. Currently, at SBTRP High School, students lack passion for school and the motivation to learn and graduate. The students have fallen into a vicious cycle of high dropout rates, which have led to high unemployment rates in their adult years due to their lack of education. As the students are clearly not motivated, a systematic change would suggest that a replacement curriculum is needed to boost the morale of the student body and to increase motivation in the curriculum. The faculty will be able to implement this systematic change by increasing the use of technology used in daily lessons. The students will begin to use project based learning, interactive white boards, and computer based research projects instead of just listening to the traditional lecture based teaching style. Currently in Michigan, it is not required that instructors that teach a content area such as reading, math, or science for example have a degree in that specific content but that they just possess a general bachelor’s degree in education. Additionally, there are also instructors who are not motivated about being a teacher and when they come to work, it shows. They have just ended up in this career because they failed to follow their actual employment endeavors. Their lack of passion towards teaching directly reflects in their lack of motivation, which hurts the students at SBTRP High School. If the selection process within employment is systematically altered to be more scrupulous and requires a more one-on-one evaluation with higher standards, the competency of the instructors will increase.
