Change and Personal Growth in Katherine Paterson's Book, Jacob Have I Loved

Who are you? Who am I? Do you know who you are? Are you positive with that answer? Change isn't always a positive experience to undergo. But the experience to undergo change can always affect something or someone's life. In the book, "Jacob Have I Loved," by Katherine Paterson, the main characters Sara Louise Bradshaw, McCall Purnee, sister Caroline Bradshaw and Captain Hiram Wallace face many obstacles in their life on Rass Island while experiencing the growth of fellow friend and family member, Sara Louise. In this book, you will discover that one can overlook one's flaws and disadvantages to find that one is beautiful and significant underneath to change/arrive at your destined fate.

One's knowledge and beliefs in religion can affect who you really are and your destiny. The main character, Sara Louise Bradshaw, feels like she is unloved by her family members and friends or at the very least, loved less compared to her twin sister, Caroline. [Sara] Louise's strong belief in the Roman Catholic bible has affected her mind on a fixed impression and has changed her inner outer-appearance. For as it says, " "Romans nine thirteen, "As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." " (Paterson 178) This quote refers to the Christian bible story of Abraham, and the rivalry of his two sons, Jacob and Esau. Religion teaches one their general morals, however when one cannot rely on religious beliefs to control their life and their soul in universal concept.

Louise is easily presuaded by a prayer and does not dare to finish it for that's what she's afraid of and that's what makes her unique. The simple prayer is,

"Now I lay me to sleep,

I pray the lord my soul to keep.

If I should die before I wake,

I pray the lord ...

...derneath. Relgious beliefs plays a very important in the creation and moulding of one's character and personality. One's destiny and fate can be determined with one's current living habits and ways, however with determination and hard workd, a hard life can be changed. Caring for the young physically can also represent the love transfer emotionally for the innocent. Sometimes desire and dedication can't change one to something they aren't meant to be, to something they aren't for there are many natural obstacles that exsist for a reason. These concepts play a valuable role not only in one's adventure in self-discovery, but also a trip around to discover and to live life. No matter what conditions and obstacles one face, one should always believe in themself for with hard work and determination, one should be and would be rewarded with valuables beyond this universe.
