I believe that every citizen deserves good healthcare services regardless of his or her geographical area, income, or race. An underserved community is a community in which people are unable to obtain health care or have limited access to the health care system for different of reasons. These reasons include ethnic background, socioeconomic variables, lower salary in some areas, extreme weather, or other life circumstances that produces an uneven distribution of healthcare resources, including nurses. The individuals in underserved communities lack affordable comprehensive health insurance, have gaps in insurance, or are living in remote areas and unable to access care. I worked with Dementia and Alzheimer patients as a Certified Nursing Assistant for almost three years. Working with the elderly has been one of my greatest achievements. I assisted my residents with bathing, grooming and making them feel comfortable. I was able to create a favorable environment for my residents while working with them. I had the opportunity to see patients go from early stage to their last stage of dementia. This gave me an opportunity to want to do more for people who are in need of my care. From my experience, I learnt that nursing is not just a job; it’s a responsibility and a calling, and it requires that you derive joy in what you are doing even in the toughest moment of caring for your …show more content…

I have assisted people with disabilities in need of assistance with house cleaning, cooking, and running errands. I enjoy what I do and consider it a privilege to be able to help people in the comfort of their homes. Helping my community is one thing that I enjoy, and I am glad I was in the position to help. I also walked with the Purplestride.org fund raising to end Cancer. I volunteered my free time cooking and feeding the homeless around San Diego with friends and classmates while attending San Diego Continuous Education Program. After completing my nursing degree, I am looking forward to the opportunity to reach out to the multitude in the underserved community. I have more to offer to my future patients, and I believe opportunities like Nurse Corps scholarship will help me reach out to the populations who need the most care. My experience in patient care, my love to help people in need of care, my calling to reach out to communities with health disparities, and my commitment in giving back makes me an ideal candidate for this
