The modern classroom has many challenges that face it. Shrinking budgets, less parental involvement, higher expectations, and growing class sizes, just to name a few. If this list was not daunting enough you also have the special needs students that have an array problems in your classroom that need specialized attention, lessons and seating. There are many forms of diverse learners from students who suffer from ADHD to physical disabilities to students with autism to ones that are bullied in school. There are so many things going on in our students lives we sometimes forget they have lives, pressures and disabilities that affect their performance and attitude in our class that have a profound impact on how they learn. For this paper I have chose to focus on learners that struggle with autism and students who have ADHD. Autism and ADHD learning disabilities are becoming more and more common in the everyday classroom and many more cases go undiagnosed. According to our textbook, of children ages 6-21in the United States and the District of Columbia, there are a reported 483, 554 or 8.1% with an emotional disability such as ADHD and 140,280 or 2.3% with Autism (Kevin Ryan). These disabilities can severely affect a child’s ability to learn in a normal classroom setting. I choose these two topics as I have seen first hand the affects they can have on the people who struggle through the classroom and life with them. I wanted to learn more about them so I could do a better helping my future students that may have these conditions, so that they will thrive in my classroom and hopefully have successful lives as adults. But ADHD affects in academic achievements has only been frequently studied in younger groups, like children and adolescents, with little research done on ADHD’s affect on college students and their resulting academic achievements. This study is relevant because it is suspected that people who are diagnosed with ADHD may experience different symptoms as they age but will always have the disorder present, and perhaps it could be revealing itself through different behaviorisms. Special education is evolving, evolving in form and substance. Education of the special needs population in the United States lacks uniformity of purpose and deed. In many school districts within the United States, special education creates a financial burden that subjugates the traditional programs (Higbee, Katz, & Shultz, 2010). The lack of consistency to approach and positive results has created academic chaos for methods and strategies in working with the special needs population. The difficulty in educating special needs children to develop their academic and social skills has created many strategies for supposed benefit, and in fairness, some work for some children. Too many instances exist where not all children benefit (p. 8). The problem is developing a strategy and curriculum that provides for the needs of all children whether they are involved in an inclusive, mainstreaming, or self-contained classroom. This is particularly significant with a particular segment of the special needs population, Asperger’s autism. Asperger’s autism is a controversial diagnosis, a diagnosis that creates a schism of psychiatric thought. Some psychiatrists classify this as a pervasive developmental disorder, while other psychiatrists see this as a form of personality disorder that has many traits associated with schizophrenia (Odom, Buysee, & Soukakou, 2011). First, the teacher and classroom assistant will focus on the eight-year-old autistic male, they will use this intervention to support and aid in his learning of a social story with verbal compliments, nutrition, and declining of foods. Both teacher and classroom assistant will help support him, and teach him to reduce aggressive behavior by using his words in order to get what he needs. He will learn to sit down quietly and wait for direction, then will practice and demonstrate each time to master sitting down quietly. Then, both teacher and classroom assistant will praise him when he increase sitting time quietly in his seat in the classroom. Even though, he demonstrates a reduction in aggressive behavior during starting point stipulations and adaptability in aggressive behavior during an intervention requirements. Overall, this will help the eight-year-old male in regards to the his strength and weaknesses of learning, social stories, which will aid to remove or lessen aggressive behavior in the schoolroom.

There are limitations to this study, such as this study only considers the effects of ADHD on children and not on adults. The reason that the author decided to focus the research on children is because, as stated before, ADHD is a childhood disorder that should be diagnosed before reaching adulthood. The author of this work believes that if the disorder, and the effects thereof, are addressed during childhood there will be less of an impact on adults, increasing the importance of treatment during childhood.

On behalf of the final research proposal, the literature review will help provide different methods and strategies to determine how to meet the needs of children with ADD/ADHD in the school setting. According to Barlow (2005), ADD/ADHD is a common disorder within one’s childhood. Normally, every teacher experience one student with ADHD in their classroom. It is important for educators to be aware and knowledgeable of the disorder. Most of the time, the educators are the individuals that identify the symptoms of the disorder and refer the student for further tests and diagnosis (Barlow, 2005). In a classroom setting, children learn and understand things in a different way from others. Observation is the school setting is a great research method to help determine future recommendations, based on the child’s behavior.

Education is a profession which requires a teacher to be able to communicate with a multitude of students on a variety of levels. There is not a class, or student for that matter, that is identical. Therefore, teachers must be able to identify and help educate students from all different types of backgrounds and at different levels. Teaching a singular subject presents difficulties, but teaching students with disabilities should not be one. There are three main teaching areas that need to be focused on when teaching a student with a learning disability. Teachers need to focus on the strategies that will assist students with reading comprehension skills, writing skills, and maintaining appropriate behaviors in a classroom setting.
