The Challenge: Making the Best of My College Opportunity

I never in my wildest dream thought that I would be attending college. It was something so far out of my reach, or at least that is how I felt. When I was a teenager; I kept having a nightmare. After I finished middle school I was living hell at home, so perhaps in a rebellious way, to my father at least, I refused to go to high school. My father gave me no choice, but to start working, so I did. In my nightmare, I was going to high school; however, I could not pass any test or turn in any homework. All of my classmates moved on to the next semester, and I kept failing without hope. I now realize that for so many years I was just hiding; seeking refuge from my nightmare. Convincing myself with the excuse that I only had time to work, and that it was too late for me to get educated. I must admit; it was fear to failure. I am in a learning process, and I understand that I have a long way to go, but I am ready for the challenge and what it might bring ahead.

My first day at class was very stressful because I did not even know what a syllabus was. This was the very first college class that I attended, and now I am glad I did. My biggest weakness is my orthography. I have to look in the dictionary many times for spelling because I make a lot of mistakes like; to write mayor instead of major. I know this is where I need to improve the most. My vocabulary is not abundant; nevertheless, I am working hard to expand it. Although, sometimes I feel that my laptop is doing the homework for me. Thank God for Microsoft. When I face a task that seems too hard to reach; I remind myself of a quote that has made an impact on my life since I first saw it. In the book, “Tao Te Ching” by Lao Tzu, he states that it does not matter how big or difficult ...

... my first big challenge indeed. My writing has improved when it comes to transition words as well as developing and following the main idea. So far so good. I certainly like this challenge, and I am looking forward for my next essay.

In conclusion, with the guidance of my professor; I feel that I am improving in every area. I understand that this is only one little step that I will be achieving; nevertheless, for me at least, it feels that I have improve tremendously compared to where I was at the beginning of the semester. As a student one must be receptive, persistent, and constant. Passing this class is not an easy task for many of us. We must work hard utilizing all the tools and resources that are available to us. There it is, waiting for us, achievement. I can only imagine what that feeling will be. This is a big challenge; however, I have to admit, I love it.
