What If the entertainment that people indulged in was suddenly taken away in a flash and replaced by what the government believes is more appropriate? Government censorship is a hot topic that has surfaced once again. Many citizens of the country believe that the government should get involved in the censoring of video games, because many crimes committed by youths have been linked to violent video games, or so it seems. The truth is that there has never been any case declaring that there is a link between the two. Government censorship is not the answer to solving this problem. Although, the opposition does have a valid point: children shouldn’t be allowed to purchase games that they are not old enough to understand on an emotional and mature level. This may seem reasonable, but that doesn’t negate the right of mature adults to be able to create or purchase what they want. Children need protection from mature themes but not with the help of government censorship because it ruins the artistic vision of the developers, it gives the government too much power, and it removes power and responsibilities from parents.
Supporters of government censorship in regards to video games usually are doing so for what they deem to be noble causes. Their strongest argument consists of their desire to protect their children from the many mature themes that appear in popular games. They believe that excessive videogame play can lead to: poor social skills, lower grades in school, less family and school time, laziness and child obesity, and aggressive thoughts and actions (Playing with Violence).
