Cell phones are the epicenter of modern convenience right? True, since 1996, the percentage of Americans owning cell phones as doubled from 32 percent to 68 percent. (Luxury) Could these electronic devices that people use every day actually be hurting them in the long run? In today’s world, the answer definitely is yes. They create conflict in the classroom while can result in a poor classroom learning environment. Students tend to want to keep up with their social media circles instead of using the search and function features of their device. Often cell phone can encourage cheating on tests or even social unrest outside of the class as cyber confrontations light the fuse for physical violent once students leave the class. The average cell phone is used less than 18 months and 140 million of them end up in a landfill each year.(Statistics) The landfills are slowly filling up with our obsolete cell phones. The phone’s circuits are coated with lead, and the lithium ion batteries often explode in landfills creating craters of heavy metal toxic waste for future generations to have to deal with. Even though there is an effort to recycle this waste, the problem is going to get worse before it gets better as more and more of the world’s citizens embrace cellular
