The cellphone has changed over the years. In 1996, the Motorola Startac was the first flip phone. 7 years later, the Sanyo Scp-5300 came out. This was the first phone with a camera. In 2006, the Nokia N73 was the immensely popular smartphone that sold millions. Phones are becoming much better over the years as technology gets better. Then the iPhone came out in 2007, which revolutionized how phones are made. This smart phone could do everything at the palm of your hand such as GPS, text messaging, YouTube, social media, etc. Technology is great for communicating with people all over the world, but it is changing our society. Why is this so? Dr. Chris Bjornsen from Longwood University did a study on in-class cellphone use and academic performance. He found out that as cellphone use in class goes up, test scores go down. The lower the cell phone use, the higher the grades are. In the study, the students who got low grades were using their phones for social media, checking emails, and text messaging. Students with a higher GPA used social media less than those with a lower GPA did. Dr. Bjornsen states, “If students aren’t paying attention, they’re not getting the information. An A student cant necessarily pay attention to two different things at the same time”. Students are so accustomed to these cellphones because we were born with technology. We are the digital natives. The cellphones are hurting our face to face interaction and social skills because we are so into the virtual world and not paying attention the real world. Without being on the phones, we can become more outgoing and encounter several activities that we may have not been able to do because were on the phones 24/7. In addition, when with friends the quality of the conversations has decreased tremendously. When eating out with friends we should put our phones in the center of the table and if someone were to check their phone they would have to pay for the food. This will help the quality of the conversation because we are not distracted and will help with social skills. To help with student’s grades, they should use their cellphones for only educational use while studying and not multitasking with distractive sites. This will improve student’s grades because students will have a better chance of paying attention to what they are doing. This is also proven by research that students who multitask less while doing homework or class lecture will do better than those who
