The first mobile phone call was made April 3rd, 1973 on a phone that could only be used for short time before the battery died. So it is no surprise that it was not introduced to consumers until 1983 and even then the price tag was near $4000 with the target audience being a high end business person (Newstream/Arraycomm). Today’s cell phone average around 8 hours of talk time plus additional features compared to older versions. The first-generation phones or 1G, were analog technology as opposed to today’s phones that have digital technology with fourth-generation or 4G. “Analog cell phones are designed primarily for communicating by voice through a system of ground-area cells.” Because this was not the most efficient technology, in 1990, 2G (or second generation) technology was developed to “send voice communications and data over the airways in digital form.” Soon after, 3G (or third generation) technology was developed that would allow more data to go through at higher speeds. 4G (fourth generation) technology was introduced in 2008 to “enable faster internet surfing, and video streaming for computers, tablets, and smartphones” (Williams & Sawyer).

Phone uses have changed dramatically over the years. At first they were just to communicate. Today, there are applications to check weather forecasts, update social networking sites, get caught up on news reports, browse the web, watch movies, listen to the radio, get navigation help, and much more. It has changed how society has viewed the importance of their cell phone. Need to know something, most will reach for their phone first to find the answer. In fact, more than half of cell phone owner’s check their phone even if did not ring or vibrate. A select group “describe their phone as something they can’t live without” (Smith, Aaron).
