Valentine’s Day is a holiday that has been celebrated by lovers for hundreds of years. The holiday, with its origins dating back to the 5th Century, was started as a day to celebrate Saint Valentine, a priest who was imprisoned for marrying Roman soldiers who were forbidden to wed. Modern celebrations of Valentine’s Day, however, have changed the focus to a more commercialized day, run by Hallmark. Typical ways of celebration include giving your partner gifts such as chocolates in heart shaped boxes, roses, jewelry, teddy bears, and greeting cards, and many would agree that there is not a holiday where one’s relationship status is as salient as on Valentine’s Day (Morse and Neuberg). Those who overestimate their relationship may feel that their partner owes them sexual favors. Likewise, those who are in weak relationships may feel slighted by their partners, and in turn feel that they are owed sexual favors. Both beliefs could potentially lead to coercion, rape, sexual violence, domestic violence, harassment, and more generally, a promotion of rape culture. Often times, rape in instances as these – acquaintance rape or coercion by a sexual partner, goes unreported or when reported, the rapist is usually not convicted. (Leahy) Although modern consent standards “with common law jurisdictions now typically define rape as sexual intercourse without consent,” it is often difficult to prove that a rape occurred without “evidence of a physical injury or at least the threat thereof (for example, use of a weapon, words of violence).” (Leahy) These facts astronomically deter the amount of victims reporting rape in instances of coercion; those who do, may be emotionally abused and ostracized in the process, and often never see justice. (Leahy) According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, more than sixty percent of rapes go unreported and approximately ninety-seven percent of rapists will never face jail time.
