Neither engaging in nor tolerating any practice that harms individuals with exceptionalities. This principle encompasses a wide range of situations but most definitely impacted me when reading the article that spoke of the mother wanting her son classified as LD. Although the boy clearly had emotional behavioral disorders, in order to avoid a lawsuit, the school told the teacher to classify the boy as learning disabled. The boy ended up stabbing someone and is now sitting in jail. Part of my professional goals are to serve society and apply decision-making with respect to its impact on students and/ or families. This situation was avoidable, but through lack of knowledge or fear of losing her job, the teacher did nothing. Everyone answers to someone, I would have contacted the appropriate authoritative figure and said something, and would have continued my way up the chain relaying the situation until someone took note.

At this point in my career I feel it necessary to take a course on interpersonal skills, as I imagine that I will spend a great deal of time interacting with others, including students, parents, and school faculty and administrators. I also need more experience in each of the disabilities to get a “real world” feel for special education. I think some volunteer time in a special education classroom will fulfill that understanding for me.
I believe education is one of the most important tools a person can have in life. Every child deserves to receive the best education possible, regardless of special needs. Being placed in the least restrictive environment, gaining necessary life skills and learning how to relate and communicate with people from different walks of life is imperative to the academic growth and success of any student.
