In this paper I am going to give an evaluation on why do wars occur using research and personal knowledge. It is important to be able to define the term war before attempting to find out its causes and reasons. Wars have a long history in humanity and I believe it is significant for people to understand the true definition of war and the main causes of the past wars. This could in a sense help the understanding of humanity to the topic of war; it could also prevent future wars. The term war is defined in the oxford dictionary as “A state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country:”, “A state of competition or hostility between different people or groups”, “A sustained campaign against an undesirable situation or activity”. Another more detailed definition of war is defined as a “state of conflict, generally armed, between two or more entities. There are many reasons or theories as to why do wars actually occur, that is why I have researched and found that the “Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research” has given several main causes of war that seem general but do apply to the past and current wars. These causes are “ideological change, self-determination, national control, resources, territory, control of part of country, control of another country.” These causes are very general, however I find this interesting as I believe that these entire categories can fit into one; change. There are wars that are economically driven, wars that are about patriotism and national pride, there are also wars that are simply intent on wiping out ethnicities, religions or races. Yet it is key to understand all of the theories and potential causes to war as one must be able to identify these factors. A change in the balance of powers, individuals want for power, or opposing interests and capabilities can all be seen as causes of war and the reason as to why they occur. Of course people can claim that the assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand was the cause of the First World War, Hitler was simply the cause of the Second World War, and these are all very broad and simple answers of why those wars occurred. However I am adamant that all wars occur for a reason and there is no simple explanation. After all, wars are never simple themselves.
Firstly, war is initiated by country having more power and wanting to expand their territory or to gain more resources. For example, in the essay The Ecstasy of War (1997) by Barbara Ehrenreich, she stated “that wars are designed, at least ostensibly, to secure necessaries like land or oil” (Ehrenreich 43). History is full of people fighting against one another and going to war for all types of different reasons. For the most part countries go to war to either protect their way of life, or for a better way of living. We want to preserve certain aspects of life like our rights, as well as helping others gain or maintain them, we also want to be able to prosper as a country. When one or some of these things are threatened a country will go to war. Some wars that fallow this trend include the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. Besides protecting or bettering life, war can also make or break a countries economy.

The threat of war can pressure a nation to waste immense amounts of money on defense instead of spending on developmental works like creating roads, hospitals, schools, and much more. War can halt a countries development. Some countries try to achieve political desires by using terrorism as a weapon against other countries. Terrorism spreads fear in civilians through acts of violence like killings and hostages. This intimidation has transformed into worldwide threat.
Shakespeare’s Othello illustrates the story of one man’s, Othello’s, self-destructive journey through vicious lies and slander surrounding his loved ones. Who is to blame for this? While the play focuses heavily on “Honest” Iago’s devious acts, Brabantio becomes the catalyst by warning Othello about Desdemona: “Look to her Moor, if thou hast eyes to see. / She has deceived her father, and may thee” (I. iii. 294-295).
All in all, the Great War was caused by a multitude of reasons including the many alliances that brought other countries into the war, a great amount of nationalism, and also tensions over colonies and technological advances. Many people can attribute the alliances for advancing and growing the amount of countries into the war. Nationalism is something missing in this time period in America, but it was still a leading factor in everybody entering the war and advancing it in the way that it did. tensions in colonies that fed the greater powers with valuable resources crucially changed the way that they felt about each other and helped to start and escalate it. The Great War was brutal and was started by many factors that added a great deal of tensions all around the world.
Scholars, psychologists and historians have studied many ideas and theories to determine why states go to war, why conflicts exist between nations. The causes of war have been broken down into three different perspectives: the international system, the nation-state, and the individual as a decision-maker. Each perspective provides a different view of why nations go to war. To have a better understanding of each view, we will examine the Vietnam War. We will also learn why Vietnam occurred, and why Americans decided to escalate the war.

World War I was a conflict that claimed over 10 million peoples’ lives, ravaged all of Europe and engineered modern warfare, as it is know today. The Great War has been scrutinized and examined through many complex theories in order to understand how such a conflict escalated to one of the most epic wars in history. This essay, like many works before it, looks to examine WWI and determine its causes through two distinct levels of analysis, individual and systemic. The individual level of analysis locates the cause of conflicts in individual leaders or decision makers within a particular country, focusing on the characteristics of human decision-making. The systemic level of analysis explains the causation of a conflict from a system wide level that includes all states, taking in to account the distribution of power and the interaction of states in the international system.

They are many ways to approach a conflict in order to find a resolution. For minimal actions people are often willing to talk about it, but for major actions the solutions to those problems are usually acted out by violence thus, the creation of war. For many centuries countries have been going to war over disagreements. However, it is not any type of disagreements; it is usually about the political beliefs of certain countries. In fact, World War 1 was caused by the disagreements of the European countries in power which were Great Britain, France, Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary. Some of the countries had a difference of opinion concerning political values on ruling the country. Many novels have been written to explain to the people how the war had a psychological impact on the soldiers who participated in The Great War, but in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque he explains the true depth of war by implicating his knowledge of his days as a German soldier fighting on the western front. Remarque’s awful war experience influenced him to write his novel to show the realistic brutality of war by graphic violence, the emotional impacts on the privates as well as the impact of nationalism by the Germans.

War has been around for centuries. From the time modern civilizations began, war has played an integral part in human history. It shaped the world into the modern world we live in. War has been said to be a great motivator, for example, the Great Wall of China was built to fend off the attackers from the north. However, the negative aspects of war far outweighs any positive effects it might have.
