The Catholic Church should not have censored materials concerning heliocentric heavens in the 16th century because the new discoveries Galileo found in his work helped to change and better the people’s understanding of the world. If a society only believes and follows one work, one author, one theory, then no one would be able to know if their beliefs and science are actually true. For something to be deemed true and not false, the concept should be tested and argued against to prove right or wrong. Galileo’s work allowed for people to break away from the Roman Catholic Church. It allowed people to have faith in something besides what scripture states. Galileo’s work should have been published against the dictate of the church because the Roman Catholic Church’s scripture has many different interpretations depending on the individual, God gave man abilities no other species possesses and should be uses in the world, and finally because Galileo and his work is very credible and provides factual evidence to prove scripture wrong.
While the majority of society during the 16th century followed the Roman Catholic Church and believed in the scripture, many people have their own way of interpreting religion and differ in what they believe in. Those who did not follow the Church were criticized but Galileo’s work allowed for individuals to find confidence in new theories and beliefs. Scripture “ordinarily lends itself to multiple interpretations” where some people interpret scripture on a more spiritual level and others take it word for word (Galileo Affair, 2). Those who do not understand scripture in the “correct” ways would appreciate Galileo’s work for a different meaning and evidence to believe in. People who do not believe in Ch...

While many people tried to hold Galileo and other scientists back from teaching the world their philosophies, eventually the Church was able to see how Galileo’s work was proven true. The Church had to much control over society during the 16th century and could have stopped society from truly understanding the Earth. Galileo’s findings and theories allowed the world to think in a different way and led to many more discoveries that shape the world today. Many inventions and new technologies would have never existed if Galileo never wrote about the science he discovered and the world would be a different place, a less intellectual and advanced world.
