Recommended: Importance of children’s literature to their literacy

Cassandra’s Progress:
From the video, Cassandra is a first grader who attends a school in Boston. It was learned that the Cassandra teacher Ms. Perez works with her students and Cassandra to ensure that they are constantly reading. Reading is something that is important because it is something that students will use for the rest of their lives. It was learned from the video that Cassandra is a first-grade student who is academically reading wise exactly were a first grader reading should be at. The teacher Ms. Perez gave Cassandra an assessment in the beginning of the year to see if she knew any of the words that first graders should know and at the end of the assessment. It was drawn that she knew 20 out of the 24 words. Ms. Perez also gave her harder words, …show more content…

The teacher implemented that this was ok. In the beginning of the year, Cassandra was able to use picture clues when she was having a difficult time reading a story. Ms. Perez helped Cassandra with her reading in different ways. Cassandra was able to become a fluent reading because the teacher used guided reading, partner reading and independent reading with Cassandra. Cassandra was able to make progress because she was influenced by practicing with books she knew and with books that she was not so familiar with. She also did activities that reinforced her reading like for example she was learning how to blend words. The way Ms. Perez worked with Cassandra really helped out Cassandra in the end of May because Cassandra was able to use for strategies when she read. For example, Cassandra was able to sound out words, self-correct herself when reading and use picture clues to sound out words. Also at the end of the school year, Cassandra was able to connect her reading with writing out

    The program was doing well to improve student literacy, until there became a problem with the fluency monitoring. The teachers would administer the prompts to the children in three different levels. They would collect their data on the students by recording the number of words read correctly per minute. The scores seemed to improve at all levels in the first through fourth grade and at the first and second level of fifth grade during the first year. But, at the third level of the fifth graders the scores took a huge drop. The scores continued to drop the following year at the same level as well. The teachers reported their problem and the passage at the fifth grade level was more difficult than the passage of the sixth grade level. When the passage was later analyzed, it was placed at the 9th and 10th grade level. The committee examined all the prompts and assessed the readability levels of all the passages. They chose two prompts for each grade level and devised a protocol whereby the teachers will use the same prompts at each of three points during the year. The teachers will give the difficult prompt first and if the student scores in the 50th percentile, the student will not require any further testing. So when the students set out to complete the story map on their own they could recall and look back to the story map that I had modeled for them. It is also important to note that not all students grasp the material at the same time. One student could be ready for independent practice, as another may still need a vast amount of guided practice. There is no need to caution if students are not at the same level, unless of course if there is a real developmental delay.
