Introduction to the Setting: Located at 1501 North Broad Street in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Fresh Grocer has offered groceries to Temple University students and local North Philadelphia residents since 2009. The store has fruits, vegetables, juices, sodas, ice cream, snacks, meats, and everything in between. In Fresh Grocer’s mission statement, they say that they commit the following things to their customers: superior customer service, to take an active part in the neighborhood and community initiatives, all while operating an ongoing commitment to the environment (Fresh Grocer, 1996). Would they have fought me? This turns into a limitation, but everything is fine. Another limitation that was apparent was the amount of time we had to work on the research itself (as per the length of the semester). For future investigation, I think that it would be extremely beneficial to have more time to observe and perhaps even a second observation location to have something to compare gender and nutritional habits. With a second location, I could potentially look at social class and how that reflects nutrition. North Philly as a whole, has many individuals living in poverty so perhaps their eating habits are not as healthy as someone who lives in Center City Philadelphia. Although, my observations were detailed and I attempted to answer my original research question, I feel as though it was left unanswered. Here is why, there is not enough results to give a definitive answer and I do not want to generalize the information. Another limitation that I need to take into account is the time of year. I conducted an observation in late October and early November, but would the results be similar in May or June? The first of November is when I did two of my observations and the first of the month is when food stamps account become full again and many individuals go out shopping. This limitation reflects the social class, but individuals are affected because perhaps said individuals do not want to shop that day because they know it will be crowed. Over the last couple years, health nutrition, and gender have been researched more and is a growing field. Overall, I am very happy with my field notes and my results, I just wish that I could in-fact have more time to observe and analyze the data so I can assert an answer with one-hundred percent
Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) came into being more than eight decades ago when several independent retailers decided that the power of a cooperative far outweighed the influence of any one individual retail grocer. One method to exploit a business’s positive and negative attributes is through the use of a Strength-Weakness-Opportunity-Threat analysis, or SWOT analysis (Cite 11). If used correctly, the analysis results can give insight into potential market areas of expansion and expose vulnerabilities to senior leadership so that they can be mitigated. AWG looks at its Supply Chain Management (SCM) as an integral part of its core business offering multiple services such as logistics to new co-op members. The team members of AWG are positioning themselves for sustainable success, now and in the future.

This is due to the symbiotic relationship Walmart has to its consumers, they are able to offer lower prices in more locations and consumers desire affordability and proximity. Despite the obvious domination of the economy by Walmart, less conventional producers and consumers are present and on the rise. Local rather than global and small rather than large, the increase of these less conventional manners of production can be seen in the increase abundance of farmers’ markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and community gardens. Farmers’ markets are common areas where farmers meet on a regular basis and sell various fresh produce directly to the consumers. The number of farmer’s markets between 1994 and 2014 has increased from around 2,000 to 8,000 (ers.usda,gov). Farmer’s offer an aesthetic that Walmart cannot provide—the opportunity to be personable. My ethnographic study took place at Whole Foods Market in Kensington, London. Before entering the store, I closely examined the front display windows. The products displayed include very red fresh apples that were in a stack. The apples were placed on a tray and table to provide the product with a lift and increase product visibility for all to see.

Fast food meals have been linked to multiple health problems. Such health problems like heart diseases, which is the leading cause of death of men and woman in the United States. Fast food has also been linked to obesity, due to the high amount of fat and carbohydrates found in their meals. An equivalent aspect is the additives added to fast food like trans-fat and sodium, which are both linked to leading to multiple health problems. Even though people believe that local businesses are not as beneficial as a big box store, buying locally not only benefits the business but also the community because buying locally builds a strong community and the money you spend at a local business gets put back into the community.
...omething to go. I found out that college student’s want foods that are quick, taste good, and cheap. The limitation to my research was that I only passed out ten surveys all at the cafeteria. Perhaps if I did more or passed them out at a different location I might have gotten different results. I also only interviewed two people, and a larger sample might have changed my results. Also only observing my roommates shopping might have limited me to what I always eat, other college students might buy healthier foods when they shop. Take a minute now and think about what you eat in an average day and see if you fall into the categories of eating unhealthy with the majority of college students. Next time you buy something to eat take a second and look what’s in it and think to yourself. Should I be eating this? Or is there something healthier that I could be eating?
C & C grocery store currently operates under a goal approach. They were committed to customer service and satisfaction. This approach provided the grocery chain with the profitability and growth they strived to obtain. The stores operative goals were attained and the chain had over 200 stores in operation. For years overall performance for C & C was excellent and came with ease. Unfortunately employee development and innovation and change weren't a top priority and it began to show. To remain successful C & C had to outsource and get advice from a team of consultants. The team dissected the company from top to bottom and advised the chain to implement an internal approach to go along with the goal approach. Implementing the internal approach will give the store managers full control of their stores which they do not currently possess. The store managers should be knowledgeable in all areas of the store to be able to fully communicate with staff. It was difficult for the district managers to give each store location the time and attention they needed when they were responsible for several other stores. Giving store managers more responsibility was a terrific idea of the consultants because the store managers have more day to day customer and employee interaction and could better assist needs. C & C was in desperate need of providing employee training and development. Cross training is beneficial for company as well as employees. Employees get the opportunity to learn other job positions and have the ability for advancement opportunities within the company. The company benefits from cross training because it provides flexibility if a store is short staffed, and it provides empowerment. A store full of happy employees from mana...
