1. Provide a brief introduction about the city and why you chose it.
The city I chose was Las Vegas, NV that ranks 298 on the Building Resilient Regions website. The Spanish named this huge valley that was full of wild grass and minerals “The Meadows” that then translated into Las Vegas. Now, Las Vegas is very different among U.S cities for it is famous for the luxury casinos and the shows. It has the title of being the “Entertainment Capital of the World” and is very prosperous in cultivating a diversified economy. I chose this city because it is a city that truly never sleeps and always has some sort of resource going in or out. Another reason why I chose Las Vegas is because it is one of the strongest economic cities in the United States and certainly takes up a lot of resources to fuel this never stopping city. I was very interested in researching to see why Las Vegas wasn’t resilient and what could be improved.
2. What, if anything, makes this city vulnerable with regard to climate change and concerns about peak oil.
Las Vegas is very vulnerable with regard to climate change because of its location. Las Vegas is a flat dessert and is already in a dire scarcity of water supplies. With a major climate change all of Las Vegas would be vulnerable. Tourism, health and environmental impacts, and water supply will all be extremely susceptible. With a climate change could lead to an even bigger drought. Peak oil is also another major concern because Nevada has no oil refineries. All of the fuel comes from a pipeline from California, where the oil is processed into various grades. If the price of oil rose in California, it would almost double the price in Las Vegas because it only has one source. That alone could ruin the economy ...

...g. The biggest thing is funding education. You have to start at the very base of things and education is there. With funding for future generations you can create a more effective resiliency plan because people have the knowledge to do so. For an example we can take the notorious wild fires that happens in Mt. Charleston about an hour outside of Las Vegas. It full of green pine tress that are also very try and very flammable. With more education we can have the knowledge to prevent fires, train more people to handle them, or even create a more effective plane that releases chemicals to put out the fire. Right now the only thing Las Vegas does is tell the pilot coordinates of the fire and then drop chemicals there. We can create a more effective plan that would improve the transportation of the planes along with the communication between the pilot and firefighters.

...he city and has suffered as a result of losing so much of its tax base to the 1967 riots. The event should be used as a cautionary tale to other cities in transition to be cognizant of demographic changes and represent all of your citizens living within your city.
There has been a significant surge in murder and violent crimes in San Antonio this year. “According to a recent study, the violent crime rate is projected to grow by 52.5 percent by December, the highest spike among 21 of the nation’s largest cities” (Eaton). So what is the reason for this massive increase in San Antonio crime? The San Antonio police chief, William McManus stated that “there is no one reason why violent crime and murder are rising so fast — both locally and nationwide” (Eaton). His answer coincides with my hypothesis and research outcomes as well. My research shows that San Antonio’s crime rate increase can be attributed to a myriad of social, economic, and governmental factors. These include, but are not limited to, population
I wonder if I should I start calling Las Vegas, Nevada home now. I’ve traveled back and forth from California to Las Vegas since I was a child. I can remember at the age of thirteen my family and I would take family weekend trips very often. By the age of seventeen I was forced to move to Vegas for 6 months right before my senior year of high school started. Since it was my last year of high school my parents decided to let me go back to California for the last three months and graduate with my friends. Since I wasn’t eighteen yet, I forced to go back to Las Vegas right the day after graduation.
Leaving Las Vegas, directed by Mike Figgis and based on the autobiographical novel by John O’Brien, is an emotional story about an alcoholic who rejects life and wants to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, and an unselfish prostitute who loves him the way he is. Ben, played by Nicholas Cage, was a former movie producer in Los Angeles and has obviously crumbled in the glamour world of Hollywood which is shown in the opening scene. Here Ben is already an alcoholic when he disturbs former colleagues that are embarrassed of his appearance at the restaurant. Ben is unstable and a mess when one of the men give him money and tell him not to contact him again. Ben then gets fired and ultimately decides to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, a city constructed on greed, crime and moral negligence. We are never certain of the cause of Ben’s alcoholism, especially when he says “I don’t remember if I started drinking because my wife left me, or my wife left me because I started drinking.” In a last attempt and hope of human interaction, Ben pays the hooker Sera, played by Elisabeth Shue, 500 dollars to spend a night with him. Sera is magically attracted to the loser type of man, as Figgis shows us with her boyfriend Yuri, her abusive pimp and boyfriend. This drama is about the absolute love between two people that live on society’s border who need each other to know that they exist.
In conclusion, I believe that every place has one building that either makes or breaks the area in which it is located. I believe that my city has areas where some buildings bring the area down. As a resident of Saginaw I didn’t really want to bring the negative to this paper, I’d rather bring the positive buildings to my paper. I hate the negativity the world has on Saginaw. But what they fail to realize is every place has a downfall, and the rise of Saginaw is on its way!
...ps and less food for all of us. From the ancient civilizations we should learn that the environment and climate is always changing. We think it’s always the same but it could easily be changing everyday. In time, it could easily be completely different and we could have no idea where we are anymore. America is more vulnerable because of the increase of population growth, urbanization, and the Industrial Revolution (xv). As Fagan says, “In our efforts to cushion ourselves against smaller, more frequent climate stresses we have consistently made ourselves more vulnerable to rarer but larger catastrophes.” Fagan means that because we have made our cities and civilization so close together because of population growth, if a natural disaster hit then it would destroy a lot more than we think it would. We need to study our climate to prepare ourselves for these disasters.
In the middle of a Las Vegas casino a secret garden waits to be explored. Over fifteen thousand people each day visit the Bellagio Conservatory inside the Bellagio Hotel and Casino; whether it is the first visit or one of many there is always something new to discover. The entrance is a tunnel through two twenty gallon aquariums filled with Clown Fish, Yellow Tang, Fiji Devil, and Heninochus. You may recognize some of them from Finding Nemo! The floors and ceiling through the tank are LED images of fish, showcasing lights that Vegas is famous for.

Moreno Valley, California. Located 65 miles east of Los Angles. Nicknamed by locals the ‘armpit of Orange County’.
Because of my husband has family in San Francisco; therefore, I visited there quite often. San Francisco is similar to Vancouver, Canada; a place that I lived for almost twenty years. It is remarkably attractive that the city is close to the ocean. Nonetheless, that is one of the primary cause the city is extremely vulnerable.
My social problem is Nevada unemployment. But since, Las Vegas is one of the major cities in Nevada, I’m going to concentrate on the unemployment rates on Las Vegas compared to other metropolitan areas. This is a social problem that is occurring in other cities, but it is more prevalent in Las Vegas than in other cities and I want to know why Las Vegas is one of the places with the highest unemployment rate. This is a sociologically interesting because I want to know why Las Vegas being such a tourist city, is still facing unemployment. This topic is very sociologically interesting because I want to see if there is any patterns that show why one city has higher unemployment rates than others, and I also want to see what other cities are doing
Hell is expensive. This is my first thought as my plane lands in Las Vegas. The
Situated in the north end of the Santa Clara Valley, Sunnyvale is one of the cities that make up Silicon Valley, which is home to some of America's most famous tech companies. Combined with a Mediterranean climate that offers mild winters and comfortable summers, the city's location makes it a wonderful place to live, particularly since it comes with all of the amenities needed to accommodate a wide range of residents. As a result, those who are interested in living somewhere with superb access to all of the conveniences that can be found in the biggest cities while still remaining insulated from their most hectic scenes should not hesitate to look into Sunnyvale residential properties when they have time.
Our cities are not what they used to be. Over the corse of fifty years the once proud, strong, and viable hubs of American economic prowess are but a shell of what they were built for. The problems that many cities have are no longer condensed to their city limits and the sprawl that was created over that fifty year period is now threatening to enter the suburban spaces that were created when the city’s citizens left. The metro sprawl is starting to loose it’s attractiveness and unless there is more acknowledgment of the problems creeping out of these cities, the same declining trends will create unoccupied commercial and residential districts not unlike the downtowns of many American cities. Without careful discussion about these trends and our communities embracement of a more regional approach, then there will be more problems in less dense suburban areas, making those problems hard to correct. In order to prevent the spread of this urban blight and avoid low occupancy rates, communities must implement regional tax policies, plan for more effective use of space, and encourage smart growth.
