Throughout the United States, some types of work are valued highly over others. This stigma strongly associates the idea all career paths without the need of formal education require no cognitive skill and are unable to teach the same principles as a traditional classroom. This also causes the view that blue-careers specializing in a trade are overall lesser than white collar or office work that mandate a college degree. Authors Matthew B. Crawford and Mike Rose both argue this widespread belief is unfair and incorrect in their essays “The Case for Working with Your Hands” and “Blue-Collar Brilliance,” respectively. Growing up witnessing his mother work as a waitress, Rose grew to appreciate the skills of physical work from a young age and in his essay takes this appreciation a step further by analyzing the knowledge required of blue-collar workers. First he references his mother’s ability to balance trays on her arm while holding coffee, having knowledge of how to position her body or to remember where each plate should be sat. He also references her ability to multitask, or “make every move count”, and how her mind was constantly at work thinking how to add task together to make sure the needs all her customers were met (281). He also cites the similar traits shared by his Uncle Joe. Joe worked as the foreman at General Motors, a quick paced environment as mentally taxing as family restaurant. Rose tells how his uncle “constantly faced new problems and became a consummate multitasker, evaluating a flurry of demands quickly, parceling out physical and mental resources” (282). His uncle learned to solve any problem, and even found areas in the shop where improvements could be made. Because of his experience, Joe was not only able to innovate the nozzle for spray painting cares but also began using shift rotation on the floor to ease the stress of factory workers (282-283). He references two individual jobs he had, one at a policy organization as executive director, the other as an office worker writing abstractions for academic journals. Working at the policy organization, Crawford shares his issues with corporate mindset, claiming their mentality required him to think backwards, and thinking of how he wanted something to play out in order to plan the steps to take. He also claims that the work was dishonest, and how his boss urged him to make arguments he did not himself agree with (371). His work writing abstractions was similar, however his main concern was that the work lacked any true purpose or passion. Crawford was given a quota of how many journal summaries he needed to complete in a day, one that was barely met within the given time parameters. He explains that in order to survive at such a pace he needed to suppress his will for understanding and accuracy (375). There was no quality control to these essays, and Crawford even explains that the abstractions only added the companies “value” to their service and no real purpose to the content (375-376). Crawford’s issue with white collar work is well understood, however in his essay he only considers the point of view of himself majority of the time, adding a brief reference to his coworkers. The university-statehouse-industrial complex has grown such that the traditional models of primary and secondary education have survived two or three decades beyond their practical use. With a public school system that segregates and discriminates based on, “college material or not?” (Brolin & Loyd, 1989) and a university system that places only one in five graduates in work in their field of major (cite), our educational system has passed its prime and is still training and educating for 20th century job markets that no longer exist. The way that we educate and what we educate for and why needs rethinking from the top down and needs to be more practical and pragmatic. Career and technical education (CTE) consisting of specialized, targeted, and focused vocational programs at all levels do more than just prepare a student for a real job – these programs have practical education and socialization value that conventional classrooms centered around a teacher’s monologue for many do not. Nowhere is the added value of such targeted programs more useful and valuable than in special classes, courses, and CTE training aimed at students with disabilities.

If more people went to college, and less went the vocational route, jobs will take a momentous hit. Today, companies will not even touch an application that does not include a Bachelor’s Degree; even if the Bachelor’s Degree has nothing to do with the job being applied for. Attention is not given to whether the hopeful applicant qualifies for the job; all that matters is that the applicant has a Bachelor’s degree. To be intelligent means to be able to apply what we learned in school and use what we learned in our everyday life to achieve a goals that is sit or one that we are accomplishing without knowing. Many people think that a person is intelligent because they went to a university, got a degree, and have a good paying job, so they must be smart and know everything however thats not always true. If we would ask a teacher or professor the chances of them knowing how to fix a car are slim. So why do we think teachers are so intelligent? Mike Rose describes his first-hand experience of blue collar workers in his monograph “Blue Collar Brilliance”. Patiently, he observed the cooks and waitresses whilst he waited for his mother’s shift to end. He noticed how his mother called out abbreviated orders, tag tables and so on. Mike Rose describes how his mother, Rosie, took orders whilst holding cups of coffee and removed plates in motion. Rose observed how her mother and other waiters worked and concluded that blue collar work “demands both body and brain” (Rose 274). He describes that Rosie devised memory strategies and knew whether an order was being delayed. We, as a society, feel the need to draw imaginary lines to separate ourselves whether it’s the line between color of our skin, our religion differences, our political beliefs, or the status of our class. As much as I wish there wasn’t a defining line between high class and the educated vs. low class and uneducated, there is. In Mike Rose’s narrative essay “Blue-Collar Brilliance,” he describes his mother’s lack of education and her hard labor work which is the quote on quote the blue collar working class.
Blue Collar workers today are looked down upon by most of society. People think that if you have a blue collar job you aren’t smart and not successful. But in my opinion, blue collar workers are the backbone of our society, and deserve the same amount of respect as white collar workers. “Blue Collar Brilliance by Mike Rose” explains how blue collar workers are very smart and use a lot of brainpower to get their jobs done. Both his Uncle and mother were blue collar workers and that’s where he got his inspiration to stand up for blue collar workers around the world. He gives us examples of how his own family members were blue collar workers and how they were smart and how they excelled at their jobs. He uses his own experiences to show us that blue collar workers are in fact smart, able to adapt to many different situations, and deserve respect.
Blue-collar jobs are incredibly diverse; his examples of a waitress, factory assembly line worker, hairdresser, plumber, and carpenter do not accurately represent this class of workers holistically. Rose emphasizes his mother’s and uncle’s work life for much of the article. His observations portray a biased insight of the manual labor his family members would endure. If Rose were to observe and judge non-family members, then their circumstances would permit a separate outcome. If Rose discussed a wider variety of situation with the same prominence as his mother and uncle, this could have been avoided. He just makes the argument for accrediting blue-collars for being more intellectual than the misconception, but if Rose wanted to place the worth of these workers on the same level as professionals of the white and pink collar workers, he does not make the cut in my opinion with the finite extent of information. Rose suggests this when slightly compares his mother, Rosie, to a psychologist, Rose states: “No wonder, then, that Rosie was intrigued by psychology. The restaurant became the place where she studied human behavior, puzzling over the problems of her regular customers and refining her ability to deal with people in a difficult world” (281). This appears to be a ludicrous endeavor to make a common demand of a blue-collar job

During her time being a maid she became emotionally impacted by the way her and the women were treated. I grew up in a family where manual labor was the key to a good income. If a person ha a lower income job, it is not always because they did not have a college education. “1 percent of taxi drivers and roughly 3 percent of bank tellers had a college degree” (Haltom). This shows that even though some people have a college education, they could not find jobs in their field and had to take jobs that they less likely wanted.
