Case Analysis Of Ban On Tobacco Ads By The Government Of India
The tobacco industry is growing dramatically these days. While anti-tobacco education is provided, numerous projects are held and healthy life-style is promoted, smoking still remains popular among adolescent and adults. Even though this habit does not seem to be that big of a deal, tobacco users require medical and physiological help to quit.
Tobacco smoking is still a growing problem in developing countries. Having checked the Tobacco Control Country Profiles of the United States America, Germany, India and Russia by World Health Organization (WHO), I can see that the developed countries are way stricter about smoking in public places. I think that the government of any country has to take this issue under its control because the second-hand smoking is extremely dangerous for people around the smoker and every smoker must allow others to breathe tobacco-smoke-free air. According to WHO, over 6 million people die from tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke (one death every six seconds) and 78% people all over the world do not smoke. Non-smoking is becoming the norm world-wide, however, the statistics of Indian population is not so positive. According to WHO, 12% out of all smokers of the world resident in India. The ban on tobacco ads by the government of India caused a big clash on interests between the politicians and the management of the tobacco companies.
There are advantages and disadvantages of such legislations in the same time. The studies show that the ban of advertising of tobacco does decrease the popularity of smoking; however it must cover all the media and uses of brands and logos. However, creating unpleasant environment with such a big industry as tobacco producing, distribution and marketing can create a lot of mess around this case. I believe that the most important consequence of this innovation is the fact that such a bad habit will be reduced among Indian population which will improve the lives of the citizens.
I believe that the government must get involved in regulation of tobacco advertisement and same applies for alcohol and other habits that may negatively influence the healthcare of citizens. The goal of any business is to be profitable and sometimes in the manager’s mind the cause may justify the means, and especially that applies for the developing countries. However, this should not be the case when we are talking about the healthcare of young generation.
