In modern days, society is entrusted with the responsibility of using one of the most accessible pieces of potentially dangerous pieces of machinery. With the rates of injuries and fatalities caused by vehicles continuously increasing, it has become the role of engineers to evaluate and improve the measures taken to prevent further damage. One major aspect of road safety is intersections, where the possibility of collisions is very high. 20% of all accidents occur within 100m intersections (K.W Ogden, 2001). The intersection that will be discussed in this report is the Broadwater Rd and Newnham Rd intersection at Wishart. This intersection is subjected to steep inclines and in some cases sight distance was largely hindered, resulting in a very unsafe intersection. Hence, to improve this intersection, speed limits have been proposed along with an appropriate duration of the orange light to prevent potential accidents. Three major concepts can be associated with analyzing intersection; firstly, the incline that the intersection is subjected to. According to Dr.Dan, the maximum grade permitted in Australia is 8%. The grade of Newnham Rd can be estimated as 5% since the road is steep at this intersection. Graphs 1 and 2 clearly show that the grade of a road has a significant impact on the stopping distance of vehicles at an intersection. As the grade of a road increases, its angle of inclination increases resulting in a larger value of mgSinθ. MgSinθ is component force of gravity parallel to the incline that works with the applied braking force in order to reduce the vehicle’s speed. For example, the driver relies on sight distance to be able to comprehend the intersection and recognize the reason to stop. Therefore, in this analysis, sight distance has been considered. Furthermore, reaction time depends on alertness, distraction, fatigue, alcohol intake of driver and the driver experience (D. Madden, 2007). The literature review on road bumps encompasses a wide array of enquiries on the development of speed bump systems that can respond instantaneously to traffic conditions. Speed bumps are raised sections of roadway designed to limit the speed of motor vehicles. They are four meters long, between 76 to 100 millimeters high, and can cover all or a portion of the width of a roadway. A speed bump works by transferring an upward force to a vehicle, and its occupants, as it traverses the bump. The force induces a front-to-back pitching acceleration in vehicles. The acceleration decreases with higher speeds due to absorption of the impact by the vehicle suspension.[1] Various researches have been done on speed bump covering the criteria or the guidelines for the geometrical bump designs, optimization for the designs, effectiveness of the bump, variation of the speed over bump, factors which influence bump designs, etc.

In an accident seat belts are usually the difference between life or death. The NHTSA estimates that over 7,000 lives could be saved if the victims had used their seat belts. There are also many other safety features of a car, like the airbags, zones, and even padded dashboards. Car safety is very important in our everyday lives, and there needs to be more awareness about the effects of not being safe in a car.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as "the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property"—a traffic and not a criminal offense like road rage. Examples include speeding or driving too fast for conditions, improper lane changing, tailgating and improper passing. Approximately 6,800,000 crashes occur in the United States each year; a substantial number are estimated to be caused by aggressive driving. 1997 statistics compiled by NHTSA and the American Automobile Association show that almost 13,000 people have been injured or killed since 1990 in crashes caused by aggressive driving. According to a NHTSA survey, more than 60 percent of drivers consider unsafe driving by others, including speeding, a major personal threat to themselves and their families. About 30 percent of respondents said they felt their safety was threatened in the last month, while 67 percent felt this threat during the last year. Weaving, tailgating, distracted drivers, and unsafe lane changes were some of the unsafe behaviors identified. Aggressive drivers are more likely to drink and drive or drive unbelted. Aggressive driving can easily escalate into an incident of road rage. Motorists in all 50 states have killed or injured other motorists for seemingly trivial reasons. Motorists should keep their cool in traffic, be patient and courteous to other drivers, and correct unsafe driving habits that are likely to endanger, antagonize or provoke other motorists. More than half of those surveyed by NHTSA admitted to driving aggressively on occasion. Only 14 percent felt it was "extremely dangerous" to drive 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. 62 percent of those who frequently drive in an unsafe and illegal manner said police for traffic reasons had not stopped them in the past year. The majority of those in the NHTSA survey (52 percent) said it was "very important" to do something about speeding. He double up as the chairman of the Veterans’ Safe Driving Initiative, the initiative is aimed at guiding the veterans returning from deployment on safe driving tips. Research has proven that it is difficult to concentrate on driving and talking at the same time. A recent British study showed that talking on a mobile phone while driving was more hazardous than operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Tests conducted by scientists for UK-based insurance firm, Direct Line, involved 20 subjects using a driving simulator to test reaction times and driving performance and compared this to when drivers had too much to drink. The results showed drivers' reaction times were, on average, 30 percent slower when talking on a handheld mobile phone than when legally drunk - and nearly 50 percent slower than under normal driving conditions. The tests also showed that drivers talking on phones were less able than drunk drivers to maintain a constant speed, and they had greater difficulty keeping a safe distance from the car in front.
