When I entered my sophomore year speech class, I went in assuming it would be the worst class of my life. The first assignment was an impromptu speech in which I had to sell an item in the room. Much to my shock, it went fantastically. I had so much fun with the speech and fell in love with selling stuff to people. Eventually I started working in retail and realized that marketing was the perfect career for me. After researching and learning about the career of a marketing manager, I knew it was the career I desired. A marketing manager’s goal is to create a desire in consumers for the product or service you are marketing. A few years have gone by since I discovered my love for business, and here I am now, pursuing that career. Overall, a marketing manager is a problem solver, a people person, and an organizer. A marketing specialist will consist of three promotion level in the second stage. A marketing specialist I, will be responsible for locating and analyzing market data at a local, regional, and national level to support existing marketing efforts. By collecting research and analyzing the data provided, a marketing specialist II should be able to determine the company’s strengthens, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats based on the marketing strategies. Lastly, a marketing specialist III will analyze the current demographic by studying consumers’ shopping and buying habits. Salary based roles such as marketing communication, marketing research, and product manager will only have one pay grade.
Over this course of this semester, I have learned a tremendous amount of information about myself from the self-exploration series. The results of my PGI (Personal Globe Inventory) presented me with a couple of different career paths to explore. The first type of career that was brought up to my attention was an enterprising career. There were a number of enterprising careers, but the one that interested me the most was business management. I decided to choose the business management because I am majoring in Sustainability and my focus is in Economics. At the start of this module, I had no idea what to expect. When I heard the term “Marketing”, only one thing came to my mind: presentations. When I used to be in school, I remembered vaguely that my presentation skills weren’t exactly even close to Suze Orman, who is considered to be America’s most motivational speaker. In fact, they were so bad, I wasn’t sure of doing this course in the beginning. But then it wasn’t like I had a choice. I had opted for BA Hons.
