The career I chose is a nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners are advanced degree nurses who perform the same functions of a normal nurse and some functions of a primary doctor (“Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners”, 2014). They mostly work in an indoor environment, working either in front of a computer to do their paperwork, and their physical work includes walking around a lot, bending over, and lifting heavy objects to people (Career Information Center, 2014, pg 197). They are also able to work flexible shift depending on their location (Career Information Center, 2014, pg 197). The medical field is among the largest and ever growing career fields, especially when dealing with Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs). In the 1960’s when the physician shortage began, the medical field created the PA and NP positions to fill in the gaps (Curren, 2007, p. 404). This matter has opened up numerous questions as more and more PAs and NPs begin practicing, especially concerning their education level. Many patients are concerned that they will not get the proper care. PAs/NPs are beneficial to everyday life by providing patients with the necessary skills needed to successfully treat them.
Growing up around a nurse, I have known from a young age that I wanted to work within healthcare and after researching occupational therapy I was sure that it was the career I am suited for. They deliver high-quality, cost effective care, often performing physical examinations, ordering tests, making diagnoses, and prescribing and managing medication and therapies”. Nurse Practitioners are able to specialize in a particular area, such as family and adult practice, pediatrics, and women’s health; and refer patients to other specialists when necessary. Some nurse practitioners work under the supervision of a physician while others run their own practices.
After finishing up term one of my nursing career, I can officially say I feel nursing is most definitely the profession I have been searching for. I have had an amazing experiences and practice by going to clinical which helped me improve upon my nursing skills and EOP SLO. It can be seen, being prepared, maintain professionalism and safe practice, having exceptional communication, respecting culture, adapting care across the lifespan, promoting health education, and having an admirable nursing process were all valued and demonstrated by me.
