Career Development Assignment Choosing a career or even a new career after being in career for many years can be a daunting task. Knowing what you want to do for the next 5-7 years, or beyond can be challenging as what is good now will most certainly change in the future. This paper will discuss the results of an online job search, building a resume, and preparing for a job interview. Job Search The job search started with looking at the job board link provided by the CSU-Global Career Center page. By simply querying on “financial analyst healthcare” multiple jobs were returned. The criterion for the search was further updated to include within 10 mile distance, full-time job type, and experience of senior level. Once the search was refined, the final result was 35 jobs. After reviewing those 35 jobs, many were excluded as they were geared more toward a technical business analyst career rather than finance but four job postings appear to be a good fit and were documented in a similar fashion to the job search log example provided with this assignment. The process of selling my work experience to one, two or three individuals in a room is far from appealing, but with the information provided by Optimal Resume, it may be less overwhelming in the future. Preparing for the interview is almost as difficult as the interview because research should be done on the company and the position prior to the interview. In Richard N. Bolles’ What Color is Your Parachute, the author seeks to guide and advise the reader in how to choose and gain a career. He goes beyond tips for the traditional job hunt, and attempts to reveal to the reader the importance and possibility of choosing a career that actually goes beyond paying the bills, but contributes to the happiness of the reader. Bolles encourages the reader to go beyond inspiration and pursue some practical self-reflection in order to realize the job that satisfies.
Career development should begin right after the individual is hired and all on-boarding training is concluded. An organization’s corporate culture has a lot to do with the career development of their employees. It should be stated and understood by new employees what is expected of them and are by the organization to attain different positions. One way to help new hires with career development is for the organization to have a mentor program in place. For the individual, they should have already established within themselves short-term and long-term goals to avoid being stuck in a rut or becoming overworked and underpaid.
Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

The purpose of this paper is to review the personal information from the career assessments taken in HS 585 Career Counseling at Bellevue University. Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. According to Weintraub (2005), “the average worker spends only four years in a job and will have 12 jobs in as many as five career fields during his or her working life.” (para. 1) My first career was marriage and motherhood followed by a surprising healthcare career. What the future holds waits to be seen. With a bachelor of science degree in information technology the options are wide open.
