Pediatrics is an exciting and challenging field which I consider the only career choice for me. My interest in the discipline was reinforced during core pediatric clerkship rotation, when I was particularly attracted by the special bond between the pediatrician, the patient, and the parents, while working for the best outcome. I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Aleppo University in Syria with very good overall average. Then, I was accepted to the Pediatric Residency Program at Damascus University Children 's Hospital which was the only pediatric tertiary center in the country. Ultimately, in 2001 I became the youngest licensed pediatrician in Syria. Afterwards, I worked in primary, secondary, and tertiary centers, in Syria and Saudi Arabia until 2013. In 2014, I joined McMaster NICU as a clinical fellow, where I upgraded my technical neonatal skills, and became more familiar with the Canadian health system. The reason I wanted to research this career is because I find medicine very interesting, but I would also like to work with kids. I realized I would like to work with kids when I was about ten. Ever since I started babysitting, I have really enjoyed spending time with children. Lately I have really enjoyed learning about medicine and all the careers in the medical field. In this paper I will be touching on a few areas, such as what pediatricians do, how much they get paid and the demand for this job, and the classes required.
I have always looked forward to the day I would begin a residency program in Internal Medicine. Prior to my admission to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria, I was motivated to pursue this path. My early childhood experiences and academic background including a Public Health degree in progress have all contributed to shape and maintain my quest for a career in Internal Medicine. I am confident that I am ready to embark on this journey.
While researching what medical field I was interested in, I learned that a nurse practitioner does everything a doctor does such as order blood work, diagnose illnesses and prescribe medicine except nurse practitioners have less than half of the paper work a doctor does. This was something that really intrigued me because I had dreamed of becoming a pediatrician to provide care for children but the thought of having mountains of paperwork discouraged me as I would rather help children than sit and file papers all day. This requires a master's degree in nursing but is recommended that one gets their doctorate. Its is also required to complete a residency and fellowship same as a doctor, because pediatric nurse practitioners have the same responsibilities as a doctor does.
Paediatric Nursing is such a diverse, challenging and worthwhile career that I really believe this is the right course for me. This career path suits people who are practical, conscientious, and reliable and who find it easy to establish good, trusting relationships with new people. When I woke up on Tuesday, September 5th, I was ecstatic to finally start working with the students at Prescott Elementary. I have been working with kids for the past four years and I couldn’t wait to meet new children. Even though I just considered teaching a few months ago, I have always loved working with kids. Ever since I was a cheerleading coach for young girls I knew I wanted to interact with kids in some way as a career. Before teaching, I though about being a pediatrician. Since I was the age of five I dreamt of being a doctor. I was that girl that took care of all of her dolls, making sure that each and every one of them was taken care of. Ever since I was a little kid joining the health profession has been one of my dreams. Helping other people in any way I can is something that brings me an unspeakable amount of joy. At a very young age I realized I had a love for children. This love was a result of me being around my young cousins. It was so intriguing to watch their behavior on a daily basis. They always yearned for attention, and used many smart tactics to receive it. Throughout the years, I never found it to be a problem to respond to their needs. In fact, it was a joy. However, when they were sick, I knew I wanted to help them, but did not always have the answers. I was able to comfort them, but my yearning to help ran deeper than comfort. Therefore, I wanted my career path to enable me to help sick and well children. Pursuing a career as a pediatrician would fulfill my desires of being able to work and advocate for children, and gaining my Master’s through this program would be a positive step towards that goal.
I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
