I am very luck, as a Fashion Merchandising major, to have received such a great and informative presentation, by Career Services guest speaker Brandi Derouen and Jamie Bouldin. Jamie is the Director for the Career and Professional Development Center and Brandi is the Assistant Director. There services are located on the third floor of the Rusk building at Stephen F. Austin State University. Her job as assistant director is to inform all SFA students about professionalism, first impressions, personal branding, social media, and job searching. On Friday, our guest speaker was Brandi Derouen. Brandi spoke to us about Professionalism. This video helped me, as a college student, to understand that I deserve a good and well-paying job if I have the right attitude towards my career. It also helped me realize, employers also deserve good employees with the acquired characteristics to earn a good check. At this point the definition of professionalism, being committed to giving your best for what you are paid to do, made a lot more sense to me. Brandi also gave us the new standards of professionalism: generalization, educational, social norms, values, social, and upbringing. She also explained how presentations and professional interactions within our college classroom benefits professionalism. She explained to us that since technology is evolving in the workplace, social media are good platforms to find candidates. She also told us if we do not create our own online image someone else will. We talked specific about the three online platforms LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. We learned LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network that expands and supports one’s professional network. This social network is an online resume, typically developed throughout college to develop connections over time so one is prepared once graduated. In the process of building your profile it is highly recommended to have a headline with a short statement, an appropriate photo, list the classes currently being taken, a professional summary, adding keywords when listening skills and expertise, update status regularly, collect diverse recommendations from colleges, have a unique LinkedIn URL, and have links to projects one has done. Once one’s profile is set up and ready to begin operating it is recommended that students add: Stephen F. Austin alumni, a company who gave you a business card, or someone who works in ones “future” field. The next platform we talked about was Facebook.
