Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common diagnosis among the other three cardiomyopathies. It occurs mostly in men ages 20-30. Dilated cardiomyopathy affects the ventricles and atria in the terms of the walls of the atria and ventricles stretch and become thinner. This causes the inside of the chamber to enlarge. The disease usually starts in the left ventricle and continues to the right ventricle and then to the atria as the disease worsens. When at its worst, the heart will be immobile except for a very small portion of the heart that is what keeps blood moving.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the thickening or enlarging of muscles cells which is the common cause of the heart attack in young adults. The thickening of the muscle cells do not necessarily have to change the size of the ventricles, but can narrow the blood vessels inside the heart.
