The focus of this paper will be installing an operating system over a network to one or many computers by creating an image. There are multiple ways to install an operating system on a computer. The way that is chosen depends on the installer’s situation. One scenario would be if the installer is only dealing with a single computer that needs an operating system installed. The other scenario is if there are many computers that need operating systems installed at one time.

An operating system is a set of programs that manage computer hardware resources and provide common services for application software. (Operating Systems) Without the operating system, a computer could not function. Applications would not be able to operate because there is no operating system to control their function. The operating system also acts as a communicator for the application software and the computer hardware. The two components have to know what each other is doing in order to function properly, and the operating system provides this service.

The first scenario of installing an operating system would be the need to install one on a single computer. This can be done with a disk that holds the basic operating system on it. It can also be done by deploying an image created from a configured reference computer or the target computer before it became corrupted. If the operating system is being installed on the computer by way of a basic operating system CD, then the drivers for that operating system would need to be installed by way of another CD. This is the case if the operating system is older than Microsoft Vista. If the operating system being installed is Microsoft Vista or newer, then the drivers for the operating system are alr...
