The death penalty is also known by many names such as Capital Punishment. The death penalty is the often referred to as the” death sentence. Since the year 1976 there has been 1,419 executions in the United States. Presently the death Penalty is legal 19 states, including Connecticut and illegal in 31 states. There are many pros and cons to death penalty. With the death penalty there are many bias as well.
One of the pros of the death penalty is in some ways it would keep people safe. If you just put someone in jail/prison for a horrific crime there is still a chance that they could escape. One of the Cons of the death penalty is that someone who is innocent may be put to death. According to The Death Penalty Fact Sheet “ Since 1973, more than 150 people have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence”. The number of inmates on death row on April 1, 2015 was 3,002. There could be many more people who are on death row now who are truly innocent.
With 150 inmates released due to evidence of their innocence, one must wonder how many truly innocent people were put to death before the improvements in many areas such as how DNA testing is collected and tested. With more improvements made each year with technology we may find out more and more that people are innocent. But what should be done about the inmates who have been but to death already that are innocent? Should there be a review process of each current person who is on death row to make sure they are truly guilty of their crimes so no more innocent lives are …show more content…

In some states Connecticut there has been a ruling stating that any remaining inmates on death row will not be put to death in other states inmates who were given this ruling then the death penalty was abolished will still be put to death. In the states where there is no death penalty they will have to live out a life sentence. Which brings me to my second topic for this paper. Life Sentence. A life sentence is a punishment that is imprisonment for life. With a life sentence there are many pros and cons just life the death penalty. This can be compared to the death sentence as well as a punishment. The first pro of a life sentence would be this would make sure there would be no more inmates. More than 200 innocent men and women have been freed in California alone, three of which were on death row. All 200 of these people were innocent. The life sentence does not put innocent lives at risk unlike the death penalty; we can take someone off a life sentence we cannot however bring someone back to life. In this sense the life sentence is a better option than the option of the death
