Controversy of Capital Punishment
“Many see the penalty as barbaric and against American values.” says Joe Messerli in his article “Should the Death Penalty be banned as a form or punishment?” (Messerli) Whether or not capital punishment should be used creates a huge dispute between Americans. The controversy of capital punishment can be understood by knowing what capital punishment is, why people are for capital punishment and understanding why people are against capital punishment.
Capital punishment was common throughout the ancient world (Henderson 6).The term death penalty is sometimes used interchangeably with capital punishment, but is not always followed by execution.Capital punishment cannot exist outside of the criminal justice system (Henderson 25). Death was a standard penalty in Europe (Henderson 8). Since the middle of the 20th century, capital punishment has become an important social, political, and legal issue (Henderson 4). ...kes and can execute the wrong person. The death penalty is a cruel thing to put a human through. I have always been taught that people can change, everybody has a rough patch in his/her life, everybody makes mistakes. Looking on the bright side, and always trying to find the good in a person, so they can change and turn his/her life around. It is very possible. So I think that capital punishment does not give the criminal a chance to rehabilitate and become a better person. Let them come back to society and live a normal life again. Another reason I am against capital punishment is that not everybody yet again, is treated the same. If one has good legal representation or a lawyer that can get them out of the trouble then one will not be executed. But on the flip side, if one is poor and cannot get a good legal representation one has no say so and is sent to death row.
