Cape Breton has the highest child poverty rates in Nova Scotia. Child poverty is a serious issue and has an extremely negative impact on children. One of the many negative impacts living in poverty has on a child is mental health issues; anxiety specifically is a common concern. The social issue I will be examining is anxiety problems among children living in poverty in Cape Breton.
Youth in Cape Breton is the population that is directly affected by this issue. However, it can also have an affect on parents watching their children suffer from these anxiety issues as well. This is a problem that affects children on a daily basis and can lead to many more problems in a child’s life. Anxiety problems can lead to more mental health issues and problems in school. Anxiety can affect anyone, however, for children living in poverty it is harder to seek out help. It puts a major strain on their day-to-day activities and their social development.
The reason I have selected this social issue because it is an issue I have experienced first hand. I volunteer for a youth Centre in North Sydney and many of the youth that attend this youth Centre live in poverty. Large portions of the youth that attend this youth Centre also have anxiety issues. These anxiety issues sometimes cause them to not want to leave their homes or talk to their friends. This year anxiety impacted them majorly when it was time to go back to school. There were children who could not even bring themselves to attend school due to their anxiety and some were even admitted to the hospital. Viewing first hand how anxiety affects children living in poverty is why I am interested in looking into this issue further; it is an issue that I am passionate about.

... low self-efficacy, therefore they will not succeed. Also if they have doubts in themselves about succeeding the self-fulfilling prophecy indicates that they will not succeed. Anxiety is a mental health concern that is found common in those living in poverty. This could be due to facing stressful situations that are directly related to their economic status.
In order to collect information on this social issue I will use community contacts and academic literature. The Clifford Street Youth Centre will be a key source of information because they have direct experience dealing with this social issue. I will research child poverty and its connection to anxiety issues as well. I have started to look at academic sources and there is an abundance of information on this topic. Finding the information I need will not be difficult and I hope to learn a lot about this issue.
