It’s difficult to visualize how anyone could describe the 1920’s as anything but extraordinary. It was the decade when Canada really began to change in many ways. Many changes that enable us to live the lives we live today happened during the 1920’s. When you think back to the 20’s, so many things happened that made it roar, including technology, women’s rights, entertainment, and more. “Electricity”─ It’s a word you did not hear often before the 1920’s. With the invention of the hydroelectric dam in the early 1920’s many citizens could now afford electricity in their homes. Along with that came inventions such as the telephone, revolutionizing the way that we communicated. Before the telephone, communication could only happen through mail. Depending on the situation, that could take 6-7 days. Then came inventions like the electric refrigerator, stove, iron and radio. The radio was an important invention in the lives of Canadians. People no longer relied on family members and friends for enjoyment. Later in 1925 came a radio that did not depend on batteries, but instead on an electric current. The radio was also cheap, allowing the majority of families to afford one in their homes. The one thing families could not afford was the car. With the invention of the Model T from Ford, people could manage to buy it, without having to sell their arms and legs. In fact, the sale of the car was so successful, that in order to keep up with demands, he had to create an assembly line. From the time when the model T was made, parking lots, paved roads, and gas stations evolved, creating a major change in the world from what it was before. The question still remains, did the 1920’s roar? Was it really the decade of the century? The only answer to this is simply yes, the twenties were one of the greatest decades of all time. A lot of people in nowadays take our rights and freedoms for granted. What they do not realize is that we owe a lot of our happiness today to the dramatic changes of the 1920’s. Overall, the Great depression was a hard time for most Canadians, and the concept of unemployment insurance brought Canada to the world wide stage. Whether it is Prime Ministers opening relief programs, events which supported the upbringing of our country, the inventions which boosted our economy in giving us more trade, or the Depression in general, the whole period of time starting from the market crash to revival was the event which Canada showed the world that we are strong and not easily crushed.
