In high school most students receive a label it seems inevitable, but what each teen does with the label is up to him or her. The label a student receives and sticks with him or her will either make or break them. Some people go through life trying to live up to the label that they were given and some spend all of their time trying to run away from it or prove it false every chance they get. What most don’t understand is that they are the one who decides who they want to be or who they will become in a way each person labels themselves. Some people are given everything in life and some have to work extremely hard to get what they want. The students who are wealthier seem to get more positive labels. To me how hard a student works will play a big role on how a student will do in school. The students who do well in school typically seem to be the ones who are labeled positively. In the article “Can you ever escape those high-school labels?” by Kate Dailey and the two essays “America Needs its Nerds” by Leonid Fridaman and “School vs. Education” by Russell Baker, the authors prove that labels have implications. In today’s education environment, using labels such as “jock,” “popular,” “preppy,” “smart,” “dumb,” “nerd,” “loser,” or “trouble maker” tend to be very common terms used by both teachers and students to describe their pupils and their classmates. Using derogatory terms to label students in school can either be motivational, driving a student to live up to a label, or it can be limiting, if the student doesn’t overcome negativity.

...s going to be friends with everyone. Baker said that children are taught young to judge. I think that our culture needs to teach children to love everyone despite their differences.
Labels can be hurtful and distracting from personal aspects that really matter, and often times are stereotypes. Unfortunately we are taught young to judge. While we are trying to figure out who we want to be we are being judged the often times, which makes it very hard to actually find out who we want to be. Going through school seemed to me to be more like a time to prove who I wanted to be and who I didn’t want to be rather than educational. Students as a whole seem to be more distracted by what everyone else thinks that education doesn’t even matter, knowledge is no longer power but who you are becomes power. Schools need to focus more on education and less on a place to be labeled.
